Film Essays And Criticism written by Rudolf Arnheim and has been published by Univ of Wisconsin Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with Performing Arts categories.

This collection of essays by Rudolph Arnheim (film criticism, U. of Michigan) explores film theory, criticism, and many classic films from the silent and early sound period (the 1920s and early 1930s). The majority of essays included in this collection were written and published in Berlin during the Weimar Republic, and have been translated into English for the first time. Arnheim argues that up until 1930, film artists created pure forms of cinema crafted with a narrative economy which could unify the most varied of effects. As movies became more realistic looking due to technical advances, cinema began to lose its integrity and viability. Paper edition (unseen), $18.95. While Jesus has attracted the sporadic interest of film-makers since the epics of the Sixties, it is often forgotten that between the advent of motion pictures in the 1890s and the close of the "silent" era at the end of the 1920s, some of the longest, most expensive and most watched films on both sides of the Atlantic were focused on the Life and Passion of the Christ. Drawing upon rarely seen archival footage and the work of both the era’s most important directors (e.g. Alice Guy, Ferdinand Zecca, Sidney Olcott, D.W. Griffith, Carl Dreyer, and C.B. DeMille) and others who have been all but forgotten, this collection of essays offers a representative survey of the Silents of Jesus, illustrating the ways in which the earliest films and those which followed were influenced by a multiplicity of factors. Written by leading scholars in biblical and early film studies this collection explores the ways in which the Silents of Jesus were shaped not only by the performing and visual arts of the nineteenth century and the technological challenges and opportunities of a new medium and industry, but also by the artistic, theological and ideological predilections of studios and directors, and the expectations of audiences as the genre evolved. Taken together, the essays collected here offer a seminal treatment of the genesis and early evolution of the cinematic Jesus.

Proximity Cinema written by Ilaria Pezone and has been published by Edizioni Falsopiano this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-04-19 with Photography categories.

“Defining proximity cinema, a concept in which only apparently distant experiences are associated, such as private and underground cinema. This is the goal of the book: to challenge and redefine the boundaries of stale and automatic critical categories. Tracing a transversal path that combines family cinema and experimental cinema, in the name of innovation, freedom from industrial and market conventions. Mapping writings for images emancipated from the usual narrative, from the general canon. Familiar or avant-garde works, which beg to be looked at through eyes free from superstructures, devoid of both pre-packaged intellectual meanings and the contemporary perverse desire for fun at all costs. Proximity cinema goes to the beating heart of things. It is amateur cinema in the etymological, amorous sense: it asks to be experienced without prejudice, it makes a clean sweep of interpretative vices, it reveals itself openly, offering portions of life, it often reaches the abstract consistency of painting through an obstinate observation of reality. Under the aegis of Roger Odin and deployed, like Stan Brakhage, in defense of the amateur, proximity cinema looks at the production of images with the aim of restoring dignity — artistic, historical, and sociological — to simple yet extraordinarily complex, intimate, and revolutionary cinematographic gestures, which are constantly and dully underestimated if not derided." Ilaria Pezone is a teacher at Brera Academy. Since 2009, she has been dedicated to the study and practice of private cinema. She’s made short, medium, and feature-length films, including France, quasi un autoritratto (2017); Indagine su sei brani di vita rumorosa dispersi in un’estate afosa - raccolti e scomposti in cinque atti (2016); Concerto Metafisico (2015); Vedere Tra - Luigi Erba improvviso e dialogato (2014); 1510 - sogno su carta impressa con video (2013); Masse nella geometria rivelata dello spazio-tempo (2012); Andare tornando a rilievi domestici (2011); GREISTTMO (2010); Polittico Preludio Adagio Altalenante (2009); Leggerezze e gravità (2008).

Music Authorship Narration And Art Cinema In Europe written by Michael Baumgartner and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-12-30 with Music categories.

Music, Authorship, Narration, and Art Cinema in Europe: 1940s to 1980s investigates the function of music in European cinema after the Second World War up to the fall of the Berlin wall, a period when composers and directors embraced experimentation. Through analyses of music and sound in a wide range of iconic films from across Europe, the essays in this book provide a nuanced reconsideration of three core themes: auteur theory, art house film, and national cinema. Chapters written by an international array of contributors focus on case studies of music in the cinema of Carlos Saura, Jean-Pierre Melville, the Polish School, and Romanian directors, as well as collaborations between directors and composers, including Michelangelo Antonioni and Giovanni Fusco, Federico Fellini and Nino Rota, Leo Arnshtam and Dmitry Shostakovich, and Peter Greenaway and Michael Nyman. The contributors shift the emphasis from a director-centered view to the working relationship between director and composer, and from the visual component to the sonic aspects of these films, without ignoring the close correlation between soundtrack and visual elements. Enriching our understanding of the complex, intertwined nature of authorship in film, the role of film music, and sound, nation-state and art cinema, and European cinematic history, this volume offers a valuable addition to research across music and film studies.

Italian Style written by Eugenia Paulicelli and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-09-22 with Performing Arts categories.

This is the first in-depth, book-length study on fashion and Italian cinema from the silent film to the present. Italian cinema launched Italian fashion to the world. The book is the story of this launch. The creation of an Italian style and fashion as they are perceived today, especially by foreigners, was a product of the post World War II years. Before then, Parisian fashion had dominated Europe and the world. Just as fashion was part of Parisian and French national identity, the book explores the process of shaping and inventing an Italian style and fashion that ran parallel to, and at times took the lead in, the creation of an Italian national identity. In bringing to the fore these intersections, as well as emphasizing the importance of craft in cinema, fashion and costume design, the book aims to offer new visions of films by directors such as Nino Oxilia, Mario Camerini, Alessandro Blasetti, Federico Fellini, Michelangelo Antonioni, Luchino Visconti and Paolo Sorrentino, of film stars such as Lyda Borelli, Francesca Bertini, Pina Menichelli, Lucia Bosè, Monica Vitti, Marcello Mastroianni, Toni Servillo and others, and the costume archives and designers who have been central to the development of Made in Italy and Italian style.
