Mediterranean states are often thought to have 'democratised' only in the post-war era, as authoritarian regimes were successively overthrown. On its eastern and southern shores, the process is still contested. Re-imagining Democracy looks back to an earlier era, the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and argues it was this era when some modern version of 'democracy' in the region first began. By the 1860s, representative regimes had been established throughout southern Europe, and representation was also the subject of experiment and debate in Ottoman territories. Talk of democracy, its merits and limitations, accompanied much of this experimentation - though there was no agreement as to whether or how it could be given stable political form. Re-imagining Democracy assembles experts in the history of the Mediterranean, who have been exploring these themes collaboratively, to compare and contrast experiences in this region, so that they can be set alongside better-known debates and experiments in North Atlantic states. States in the region all experienced some form of subordination to northern 'great powers'. In this context, their inhabitants had to grapple with broader changes in ideas about state and society while struggling to achieve and maintain meaningful self-rule at the level of the polity, and self-respect at the level of culture. Innes and Philip highlight new research and ideas about a region whose experiences during the 'age of revolutions' are at best patchily known and understood, as well as to expand understanding of the complex and variegated history of democracy as an idea and set of practices.

Este libro ofrece un análisis de la construcción de la ciudadanía y la representación política en Perú y en Ecuador durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, concretamente en torno a la década de 1860. La configuración y el funcionamiento del Parlamento son el punto de referencia fundamental en esta investigación, en la que resulta crucial el análisis del discurso, especialmente del parlamentario. Los representantes de este fueron los encargados de elaborar, debatir y promulgar todo tipo de textos legislativos, que sentarían las bases del juego político. Además, fueron los responsables de diseñar el sistema electoral del que saldrían electos los propios congresistas. En este proceso resultaba fundamental el desarrollo de los debates parlamentarios, especialmente aquellos que configuraban los contornos de la inclusión y la exclusión política. A partir de aquí, las élites políticas e intelectuales peruanas y ecuatorianas definieron las diferentes categorías políticas -ciudadanos, electores y representantes-, que dan título a esta obra. Para acceder a cada una de estas, los propios parlamentarios tuvieron que delimitar una serie de requisitos en los que entraban en juego aspectos como el territorio, el género o la raza, elementos que se cruzan en esta investigación. Además, los casos de estudio señalados se insertan en un contexto geográfico más amplio, utilizando para ello una metodología comparativa y un enfoque transnacional que permite abarcar varios niveles espaciales: el ámbito andino, el contexto iberoamericano y el espacio atlántico.

This book provides the non-Italian scholar with an extensive picture of the development of Italian economics, from the Sixteenth century to the present. The thread of the narrative is the dialectics between economic theory and political action, where the former attempts to enlighten the latter, but at the same time receives from politics the main stimulus to enlarge its field of reflection. This is particularly clear during the Enlightenment. Inside, this book insists on stressing that Galiani, Verri, and Beccaria were economists quite sensitive to practical issues, but who also were willing to attain generally valid conclusions. In this sense, "pure economics" was never performed in Italy. Even Pareto used economics (and sociology) in order to interpret and possibly steer the course of political action. Within this book it illustrates the Restoration period (1815-48). There was a slowdown of the economists' engagement, due to an adverse political situation, that prompted the economists to prefer less dangerous subjects, such as the relationship between economics, morals, and law (the main interpreter of this attitude was Romagnosi). After 1848, however, in parallel with the Risorgimento cultural climate, a new vision of the economists' task was eventually manifested. Between economics and political Liberalism a sort of alliance was established, whose prophet was F. Ferrara. While the Historical school of economics of German origin played a minor role, Pure Economics (1890-1940 approx.) had a considerable success, as regards both economic equilibrium and the theory of public finance. Consequently, the introduction of Keynes's ideas was rather troubled. Instead, Hayek had an immediate success. This book concludes with a chapter devoted to the intense relationships between economic theories, economic programmes and political action after 1945. Here, the Sraffa debate played an important role in stimulating Italian economists to a reflection on the patterns of Italian economy and the possibilities of transforming Italy's economic and social structure.
