"Paul Celan (1920-1970), one of the most important and challenging poets in post-war Europe, was also a prolific and highly idiosyncratic translator. His post-Holocaust writing is inextricably linked to the specific experiences that have shaped contemporary European and American identity, and at the same time has its roots in literary, philosophical and scientific traditions that range across continents and centuries surrealism being a key example. Celan's early works emerge from a fruitful period for surrealism, and they bear the marks of that style, not least because of the deep affinity he felt with the need to extend the boundaries of expression. In this comparative and intertextual study, Charlotte Ryland shows that this interaction continued throughout Celans lifetime, largely through translation of French surrealist poems, and that Celans great oeuvre can thus be understood fully only in the light of its interaction with surrealist texts and artworks, which finally gives rise to a wholly new poetics of translation. Paul Celan's works dwell on the threshold between the extremes of poetic expression and philosophical reflection. The divergent literary and critical idioms that have marked Celan's writing—and that Celan's writing has come to mark for others (Hamacher, Derrida, Szondi)—thus call for a new philology. This philology cannot be situated within presupposed genres or fields but rather explores the ways in which poetic and philosophical ambitions meet in texts by, and on, Celan. The first part of Thresholds, Encounters ("Ex-posing the Poem") speaks to issues of history, ecology, and aurality; the second part ("Language Dislodged") delves into Celan's articulations of encounter, positionality, and translation. The book At the Threshold of Mystery: Poetic Encounters with Other(ness) addresses the problem of literary dialogue as it appears in the philosophical, poetic and aesthetic discourses in the last two centuries. Central to the dialogue with Other(ness) is a background discussion of the idea of friendship as an encounter with another individual, with another man, with God (or gods) and also with another culture, the issues present in Emmanuel Levinas's ethical philosophy. Merleau-Ponty's concept of intersubjectivity becomes a crucial point in the creative construction of the philosophy of dialogue, whose ideological antecedents date back to the times of Plato. At the border of language, or at the threshold of mystery, there crowds what is « metaphysically arcane or immediate, that which signals « the other, the « out there. The central idea which this book examines is how to reconcile the hermetically sealed historical past with modern times in order to inaugurate the genuine philosophy of dialogue. It is the author's strong belief that by interrupting totality, the poetic work, which often turns into the prophetic signature or voice, « the trace of other(ness), seems to give testimony to the primordial experience so essential for the birth of poetry. The poetic examples of the mysterious encounters with Other(ness) are selected, each in its most idiosyncratic way, from Gerard Manley Hopkins, Rainer Maria Rilke, Paul Celan, Seamus Heaney, and two Polish poets, Zbigniew Herbert and Adam Zagajewski (but also from Walter Pater's aesthetic epiphanies).
