Dictionary Of Argumentation written by Christian Plantin and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-24 with Mathematics categories.

Contemporary argumentation studies continue a tradition founded by Aristotle, Cicero, Quintilian and others. Since the end of the Second World War, they have been vigorously taken over and reoriented by different schools of thought, stressing their link to the renovated disciplines of logic, dialectic, rhetoric or grammar. Anscombre, Blair, Ducrot, van Eemeren, Grize, Grootendorst, Hamblin, Johnson, Olbrechts-Tyteca, Perelman, Toulmin, Walton, Woods, and many others, have reconceptualized the field, reconnected it to contemporary scholarship and opened up rigorous and innovative avenues of research. At the turn of the century, argumentation in science education and argumentation about socio-scientific issues emerged as new fields within the larger area of argumentation studies. Within this diverse and challenging context, this comprehensive Dictionary makes a significant contribution to the construction of a common culture and shared vocabulary of argumentation. Argumentation is approached as an all-pervasive linguistic-cognitive activity, and argumentation studies are posited as a multidisciplinary field. This Dictionary of Argumentation defines 301 concepts. The 223 main entries define, comment upon, and illustrate a specific concept or a set of interrelated concepts. The 78 secondary entries refer to the relevant main entry (-ies). The relationships between the entries are marked by a system of cross-references, which strengthen the conceptual coherence of the Dictionary as a whole. This is the first dictionary of its kind to be published in English.

Sony Labou Tansi's surreal portrait of a despised and incompetent regime is a biting, burlesque fable, incisive in its description of postcolonial life. History has been silenced in this modern African state: only the voices of the dead cry out for justice. It is a cry answered by Estina Bronzario, the Woman of Bronze, determined to act against the political and moral corruption of male-dominated society. Murders escalate, crowds ebb and flow, and the years roll by. But all the while, the police never come... 'Central Africa's greatest writer.' New York Times 'No greater genius than Sony Lab'ou Tansi.' Independent 'Sublimely surreal allegory... Tansi [is] one of Africa's important voices.' Publishers Weekly

This volume is the first to make the Middle English Breton lays available to teachers and students of the Middle Ages. Breton lays were produced by or after the fashion of Marie de France in the twelfth century and claim to be "literary versions of lays sung by ancient Bretons to the accompaniment of the harp." The poems edited in this volume are considered distinctly "English" Breton lays because of their focus on the family values of late medieval England. With the volume's helpful glosses, notes, introductions, and appendices, the door is opened for students to study Middle English poetry and the medieval family alike.

In Search Of Africa written by Manthia Diawara and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-07-01 with Social Science categories.

"There I was, standing alone, unable to cry as I said goodbye to Sidimé Laye, my best friend, and to the revolution that had opened the door of modernity for me--the revolution that had invented me." This book gives us the story of a quest for a childhood friend, for the past and present, and above all for an Africa that is struggling to find its future. In 1996 Manthia Diawara, a distinguished professor of film and literature in New York City, returns to Guinea, thirty-two years after he and his family were expelled from the newly liberated country. He is beginning work on a documentary about Sékou Touré, the dictator who was Guinea's first post-independence leader. Despite the years that have gone by, Diawara expects to be welcomed as an insider, and is shocked to discover that he is not. The Africa that Diawara finds is not the one on the verge of barbarism, as described in the Western press. Yet neither is it the Africa of his childhood, when the excitement of independence made everything seem possible for young Africans. His search for Sidimé Laye leads Diawara to profound meditations on Africa's culture. He suggests solutions that might overcome the stultifying legacy of colonialism and age-old social practices, yet that will mobilize indigenous strengths and energies. In the face of Africa's dilemmas, Diawara accords an important role to the culture of the diaspora as well as to traditional music and literature--to James Brown, Miles Davis, and Salif Kéita, to Richard Wright, Spike Lee, and the ancient epics of the griots. And Diawara's journey enlightens us in the most disarming way with humor, conversations, and well-told tales.

Sensibility written by Janet Todd and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-05-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

The cult of sensibility jangled the nerves of Europe in the mid-eighteenth century. It touched all literary genres and brought into prominence those qualities of tenderness, compassion, sympathy and irrational benevolence associated with women by the binary psychology of the time. It privileged spontaneous emotion and found this expressed in the bodily manifestations of tears, fainting fits, flushes and palpitations. Valuing the pure victim, it took as its archetypes the innocent dying Clarissa and the benevolent, suffering man of feeling. In Sensibility, originally published in 1986, Janet Todd charts the growth and decline of sentimental writing as a privileged mode in the eighteenth century. She shows how sentimental writing is riven with contradictions: while it applauds fellowship, it also expresses a yearning for isolation, and while it stresses the ties of friendship and family, it does so at the expense of sexual feeling, which grows menacing and destructive. By the 1770s, as the idea of sensibility was losing ground, ‘sentimentality’ came in as a pejorative term. Janet Todd ends her study of sensibility by detailing the various attacks on the cult, from radicals and conservatives, feminists and Christian moralists; from Coleridge who saw it as unmanning the nation to Jane Austen who considered it an elaborate sham

Polish Jewish Literature In The Interwar Years written by Eugenia Prokop-Janiec and has been published by Syracuse University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-04-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

Foremost among a recent wave of Polish books on Jewish issues, this groundbreaking work rectifies long-held misconceptions about Polish Jewish writers. Popular notion has it that Polish Jewish writers, unlike their counterparts in Western. Northern, and Central Europe, wrote solely in Yiddish or Hebrew. Yet between the two world wars Poland produced an elite group of assimilated Jews who wrote exclusively in Polish. Theirs was not an easy lot. Torn between love of Poland and its literature and their own Jewish identity, they straddled a fine line between two cultural worlds-at once advocating acculturation while prey to virulent anti-Semitism. This pioneering, award-winning volume examines the emergence and development of these writers, their personal plight, and the profound effect they had upon Polish letters and poetry. Meticulously researched, it explores the role of language as a bridge, attitudes toward Polish writing, impact of the ghetto, and the transformation of Polish into a force for its Jewish populace. Finally, it pays homage to fine literary voices silenced by the Holocaust.
