Asma Sayeed's book traces the history of Muslim women's religious education over the course of nearly ten centuries. It focuses on women's transmission of religious knowledge (specifically of reports attributed to the Prophet Muḥammad) and examines the reasons for the rise, decline, and reappearance of women in this arena. It also relates these trends to broader issues facing Muslim communities in these eras. This fascinating history is relevant for anyone interested in the history of Muslim women as well as those seeking a fuller understanding of developments in Muslim educational and social history, such as the development of Sunnī Muslim orthodoxy, the evolution of the scholarly classes (ulamā), and the social history of ḥadīth transmission.

Carrying On The Tradition A Social And Intellectual History Of Hadith Transmission Across A Thousand Years written by Garrett Davidson and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-07-20 with History categories.

In Carrying on the Tradition Garrett Davidson employs a variety of largely unutilized print, as well as archival sources collected from the Near East, North Africa, India, Europe, and North America. He analyses these sources to excavate the fundamental reinvention of the conceptions and practices of hadith transmission that resulted from the establishment of the hadith canon. Further, the book examines how hadith scholars reimagined the transmission of hadith, not as a scholarly tool, as it had originally been, but instead as, among other things, an act of pious emulation of the forefathers. It demonstrates the emergence of new genres and subgenres of hadith literature, as a result of this shift, examining them as artefacts of the cultural, social, and intellectual history of Muslim religiosity from the tenth to twentieth centuries.

This reference offers reliable knowledge about women's diverse faith practices throughout history and prehistory, and across cultures. Across the span of human history, women have participated in world-building and life-sustaining cultural creativity, making enormous contributions to religion and spirituality. In the contemporary period, women have achieved greater equality, with more educational opportunities, female role models in public life, and opportunities for religious expression than ever before. Contemporaneously with this increased visibility, women are actively and energetically engaging with religion for themselves and for their communities. Drawing on the expertise of a range of scholars, this reference chronicles the religious experiences of women across time and cultures. The book includes sections on major religions as well as on spirituality, African religions, prehistoric religions, and other broad topics. Each section begins with an introduction, followed by reference entries on specialized subjects along with excerpts from primary source documents. The entries provide numerous suggestions for further reading, and the book closes with a detailed bibliography.
