This book is about a long journey by sea, from Fremantle, in Western Australia, to Whitby, in Yorkshire. It took 139 days and the author and his shipmates travelled 16,626 miles. They were crewing on board the Endeavour Replica, modelled on Captain Cook's ship, in which he completed a similar journey in the opposite direction in the eighteenth century. The journey is full of hazards and privations, like Cook's own journey, and the adventures and the vicissitudes are well described and well remembered. The author celebrated his 59th. birthday close to the spot on the earth's surface that is furthest from any land.

Strange it must appear that the account of perhaps the most celebrated and, certainly to the English nation, the most momentous voyage of discovery that has ever taken place--for it practically gave birth to the great Australasian Colonies--has never before been given to the world in the very words of its great leader. It has fallen out in this wise. After the return of the Endeavour it was decided that a full and comprehensive account of the voyage should be compiled. COOK'S JOURNAL dealt with matters from the point of view of the seaman, the explorer, and the head of the expedition, responsible for life, and for its general success. The Journals of Mr. Banks and Dr. Solander looked from the scientific side on all that presented itself to their enthusiastic observation. What could be better than to combine these accounts, and make up a complete narrative from them all? The result, however, according to our nineteenth-century ideas, was not altogether happy. Dr. Hawkesworth, into whose hands the Journals were put, not only interspersed reflections of his own, but managed to impose his own ponderous style upon many of the extracts from the united Journals; and, moreover, as they are all jumbled together, the whole being put into Cook's mouth, it is impossible to know whether we are reading Cook, Banks, Solander, or Hawkesworth himself.

The voyage of Endeavour is known for its exploration of enchanting Tahiti and other islands of the South Seas, for discovering that neither of New Zealand's islands was a part of the elusive Southern Continent, for tracing the perilous east coast of Australia. But the voyage should also be known for its contribution to astronomy. By timing a transit of Venus across the sun, James Cook and other observers on the voyage were able to contribute to our knowledge of the size of the solar system. The book begins with the story of how the adventure was conceived and put together. Then the adventure itself is described, with its outgoing voyage from England to Madeira and Rio de Janeiro and around Cape Horn to Tahiti, and its return voyage from Tahiti and the Society Islands to New Zealand and Australia, then back to England by way of Indonesia and Cape Town. The scientific outcome is then described, as well as the future of the principal members of the expedition. Finally the voyage is put into the context of the long struggle to find the distance of the sun from several centuries before Christ till modern times.
