Behavioral toxicology is a young discipline in the United States; so young, in fact, that this is one of its first books. Behavioral questions are bound to play a major role in future scientific work and governmental decisions involving the health effects of environmental contaminants and other chemicals. This role springs from two key problems that face scientists and public agencies required to set acceptable exposure standards or to determine criteria for the toxicity of therapeutic chemicals: How do you evaluate effects that may show up only as subtle functional disturbances? And how do you de tect toxic effects early enough so that they may still be reversible, before they produce major damage? The contributions in this book come from a collection of scientists whose interests span a wide variety of problem areas. The focus is largely on me thodological issues because they represent the most immediate concern of the discipline. We expect that this collection of papers will represent a useful source book for behavioral toxicology for some time. For the past few years, the University of Rochester's Department of Radiation Biology and Biophysics has sponsored a series of international conferences on chemical toxicity, partly as a response to concern over the con sequences to health of the rich chemical soup in which we live. This book is based upon presentations made to the fifth of the series. Held in June, 1972, it was the first formal meeting devoted to behavioral toxicology in this country.

Chemical Environmental Pollutants And Their Effect On Health written by Aikaterini Salavoura and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-04-07 with Medical categories.

This book focuses on the impact of environmental chemicals on human health. Its coverage includes metals contaminating the environment, persistent organic pollutants (POPs), air pollution and endocrine disruptors. Harmful consumer products, workplace exposure, cosmetics, microplastic waste are described. Since most chemical substances are related to degenerative disorders and other communicable diseases, the proposed models of disease are analyzed, including cancer and psychiatry disorders. To provide an understanding of the mechanisms of diseases due to exposure, the book also covers basic background knowledge in genetics and epigenetic mechanisms. Oxidative stress and antioxidant mechanisms of the body are presented and how chronic inflammation and oxidative stress leads to disease. Finally, the role of a well-balanced diet and ingredients in the diet which prevent disease as well as the mechanisms of prevention are emphasized.

While the first edition of this book provided a succinct introduction to pediatric neuro-oncology, biological knowledge of childhood CNS tumors has “exploded” over the past few years and a new edition of this textbook is needed to keep it up-to-date. This updated edition will include chapters on cancer predisposition in children with brain tumors, gliomas, embryonal brain tumors, ependymoma, CNS-GCT, targeted therapies in pediatric brain tumors, and long-term sequelae. New developments covered include the following: - Techniques like DNA methylation have improved the diagnostic process, and have led to an integrated diagnosis of histology, ICH and methylation. - Tumor pathways have been detected, which defines more subgroups within a tumor entity, and results in more individualized treatment for the patient. - Therapeutic options outside the standard combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation have either been implemented within the last years, or are currently under consideration. This book will be aimed at pediatric oncologists and neurooncologists, neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists. Chapters detailing quality of life and supportive care will make this 2nd edition a useful resource for nurses, social workers, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists alike.

Clinical practice related to sleep problems and sleep disorders has been expanding rapidly in the last few years, but scientific research is not keeping pace. Sleep apnea, insomnia, and restless legs syndrome are three examples of very common disorders for which we have little biological information. This new book cuts across a variety of medical disciplines such as neurology, pulmonology, pediatrics, internal medicine, psychiatry, psychology, otolaryngology, and nursing, as well as other medical practices with an interest in the management of sleep pathology. This area of research is not limited to very young and old patientsâ€"sleep disorders reach across all ages and ethnicities. Sleep Disorders and Sleep Deprivation presents a structured analysis that explores the following: Improving awareness among the general public and health care professionals. Increasing investment in interdisciplinary somnology and sleep medicine research training and mentoring activities. Validating and developing new and existing technologies for diagnosis and treatment. This book will be of interest to those looking to learn more about the enormous public health burden of sleep disorders and sleep deprivation and the strikingly limited capacity of the health care enterprise to identify and treat the majority of individuals suffering from sleep problems.

Bioremediation of Environmental Toxicants: Toxicants, Sources, Mechanism, Impact on Human Health, and Bioremediation Approaches provides insight into the nature of environmental toxicants, the impact on human health, and their bioremediation approaches, viz. nanotechnology, microorganism, and phytoremediation. Various environmental toxicants such as pesticides, heavy metals, plastic and microplastic waste, dyes used in industries, colorants, corrosive agents, and biomedical waste show different levels of mechanism of toxicity, possessing a significant threat to human health as well as the stability of ecosystems. To decontaminate the environment from these toxic compounds a low-cost effective technique is required. Bioremediation is a sustainable approach by which hazardous pollutants are converted into less harmful or non-toxic compounds using effective techniques to detoxify contaminated soil and water. In recent years, research has steadily concentrated on the various bioremediation approaches, viz. nanoparticle, microorganism, and phytoremediation. KEY FEATURES Showcases contributions from high-profile experts in the field Highlights the current state and importance of environmental bioremediation Provides detailed knowledge about the mechanism, toxicity, and action of environmental toxicants Furnishes a deep understanding of environment–human interaction and the after effects Outlines the state-of-the-art bioremediation technologies, viz. nanotechnology, microbial- and plant-based mitigation of environmental toxicants
