Fulcro del racconto è l’amore. L’amore, quando posseduto, rende sereni e invincibili. Il racconto s’inizia col Principe senza paura. La spensierata esistenza di lui e della sua principessina Piccolo Fiore è sconvolta dalla liberazione di quattro geni malefici (Tifone, Krato, Bia, Lamo) contenuti in altrettanti boccali sigillati. Caduto nella rete di una maliarda (la strega Strigenia), ormai privo del lume dell’amore, il Principe senza paura affronta Mos che gli appare come labirinto popolato di mostri. Uscitone “vincitore”, diviene facile preda dell’odio; odio che lo consegnerà alla fine vittima tra le grinfie dei malvagi geni. Soltanto il sacrificio del suo leone saprà evitargli la morte. Piccolo Fiore, invece, consigliata dal saggio anziano suo tutore, coraggiosamente affronta la fortezza di Mas al fine di recuperare magiche armi, le sole che abbiano effetto letale per le malvagie potenze. Quelle armi appartengono ad un altro principe, Danao, che Piccolo Fiore incontrerà morente sulla sua strada tornando vincitrice da Mas. Ella salverà il nuovo principe, e ne racconterà poi la storia ad un pescatore, vittima anch’egli dei quattro geni, il quasi protagonista buffo dell’ultima parte del racconto nella veste di scudiero del principe Danao. La storia di Danao è quella di un uomo assetato d’Amore. Lo cerca, perché gli manca; in lui il conflitto tra carne e spirito è profondo. Incontra la regina che sognava (Aid): lei lo ama, lui la brama. La prova del labirinto che lui, la sua sposa regina ed i suoi uomini affronteranno risulterà cruciale: senza verità, carità o amore non se ne può uscire. Sarà l’abnegazione di Aid a salvare Danao, altrimenti perduto. Ella strapperà l’uomo alla morte levandolo a sé (sogno di Danao) offrendosi poi lei medesima alla morte (sogno di Aid). E ancora Danao ricade, sedotto sempre dalla carne, (Adamita Shan), e ancora una donna lo risolleva (Myriam). Narada l’eremita → l’incontro con Myriam → il Santo → il mostro di Belvio, segnano un percorso fondamentale per la formazione del nuovo principe. Quando, nell’ultima parte del racconto, è introdotta la figura del pescator-scudiero, la vicenda tormentata dei due principi è, di fatto, risolta. Il Principe senza paura è ripiegato definitivamente su sé stesso. Il principe Danao, rigenerato dall’amore, si prepara invece ad affrontare, con fiducia e volontà serena, le dure prove che ancora lo attendono (il mostro Shan e i quattro geni). La vita può allora sorridere.
