This report grew out of an April 2001 study on energy prepared by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) for the ninth session of the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development. That study, called Energy for Life, A Case Study Compendium, contained 35 examples demonstrating the variety of ways that energy technologies can improve quality of life and showing the dramatic impact these technologies can have on economic development. This report presents case studies of energy and water technology applications to illustrate how sustainable development can flourish in developing countries when principles of good governance are present. It also illustrates that funding from both the private and the public sectors flows to areas where principles of good governance are operating.

Sustainability is a new, important discourse aimed at promoting a new strategy in the development of energy, water and environmental (EWE) systems — the key components that affect the quality of life on our planet. It is becoming increasingly clear that the quest for sustainable development requires integrating economic, social, cultural, political and ecological factors. The behavior and properties of an EWE system arise not merely from the properties of its component elements, but also to a large degree also from the nature and intensity of their dynamic interlinkages. This volume helps clarify the complexity of these problems by providing a deeper understanding of the implications of the different aspects of sustainability. This work contains a collection of selected, peer-reviewed and state-of-the-art reflecting papers that were presented at the Third Dubrovnik Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems that was held in June 5-10, 2005 in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

Environmental engineers support the well-being of people and the planet in areas where the two intersect. Over the decades the field has improved countless lives through innovative systems for delivering water, treating waste, and preventing and remediating pollution in air, water, and soil. These achievements are a testament to the multidisciplinary, pragmatic, systems-oriented approach that characterizes environmental engineering. Environmental Engineering for the 21st Century: Addressing Grand Challenges outlines the crucial role for environmental engineers in this period of dramatic growth and change. The report identifies five pressing challenges of the 21st century that environmental engineers are uniquely poised to help advance: sustainably supply food, water, and energy; curb climate change and adapt to its impacts; design a future without pollution and waste; create efficient, healthy, resilient cities; and foster informed decisions and actions.

The current literature compartmentalizes the complex issue of water and wastewater into its discrete components; technology, planning, policy, construction, economics, etc. Considered from the perspective of sustainability, however, water in the urban environment must be approached as a single resource that can be continuously reused and recycled. This book will be the first to capture all of the current work on this idea in a single, integrated, plan for designing the water-centric cities of the future. From new construction to the retrofitting of existing systems, this book presents the case for a new urban relationship to water, one with a more sustainable connection to the environment and the hydrological cycle. Through case studies of successfully planned and built systems around the world, the book will educate the reader about the need for a new approach to urban water management, and make the case that these changes are not only possible but imperative.

The over-exploitation of the Earth¿s resources has brought about an unsustainable situation where biodiversity and ecological balance are under dire threat. But the most immediate concern is global warming, caused by high anthropogenic emission of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Global warming is upsetting the climate pattern. Climate change is threatening the Earth with severe drought and floods, storms, and cyclones; rising sea levels from the general warming of sea water and melting of glacial and Arctic ice; inundation of low coastal areas by the rising sea; disruption in the agricultural crop pattern; and serious problems with regard to availability of fresh water. With the prescience of all these serious challenges facing the earth, the book attempts to engage the learned, researchers, graduate students, and social activists and work for the mitigation of and adaptation with global warming and climate change.

This book documents innovative approaches for integrating green technologies and decentralized water infrastructure. The two major components of green decentralized water infrastructure are: (1) using locally available alternative water sources (rainwater, greywater, and brackish/saltwater) (at multiple scales, e.g., a single building to a neighborhood community level); and (2) using renewable energy resources (solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, other). Chapter 1, introduces the concept and framework of green decentralized water infrastructure. The subsequent nine chapters give a detailed description of global case studies, and discuss significant components of the green decentralized water infrastructure and the challenges. The chapters document global case studies and prospects (chapters 1-7) followed by challenges facing decentralized water infrastructure (chapters 8-10). The book will provide a cross-disciplinary knowledge-base for smart & futuristic water management in urban settings and a significant opportunity for sharing smart and decentralized water technologies at the global level

A guide for urban areas to achieve sustainability by recovering water, energy, and solids Integrated Sustainable Urban Water, Energy, and Solids Management presents an integrated and sustainable system of urban water, used (waste) water, and waste solids management that would save and protect water quality, recover energy and other resources from used water and waste solids including plastics, and minimize or eliminate the need for landfills. The author—a noted expert on the topic—explains how to accomplish sustainability with drainage infrastructures connected to receiving waters that protect or mimic nature and are resilient to natural and anthropogenic stresses, including extreme events. The book shows how to reduce emissions of greenhouse gasses to net zero level through water conservation, recycling, and generating blue and green energy from waste by emerging emission free technologies while simultaneously installing solar power on houses and wind power in communities. Water conservation and stormwater capture can provide good water quality for diverse applications from natural and reclaimed water to blue and green energy and other resources for use by present and future generations. This important book: Considers municipal solid waste as an ongoing source of energy and resources that will eliminate the need for landfills and can be processed along with used water Presents an integrated approach to urban sustainability Offers an approach for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by communities to net zero Written for students, urban planners, managers, and waste management professionals, Integrated Sustainable Urban Water, Energy, and Solids Management is a must-have guide for achieving sustainable integrated water, energy, and resource recovery in urban areas.
