When one ex-boyfriend gets married, a girl can laugh it off. With two, she begins to get nervous. But three? Three? Angie DiFranco is starting to take it personally. What is it about her that doesn't incite men to plunk down large sums of money in the name of eternal love? According to her one successfully married friend, men are like tight lids. One woman comes along, loosens him up, leaving him for the next woman to pop off the lid, no problem. After all, would Jennifer have landed Brad so easily without the Gwyneth factor? Suddenly Angie looks at Kirk, her current boyfriend, with new eyes. Kirk, whose last girlfriend loosened his lid by giving him The Ultimatum. Kirk, who suddenly seems primed to be popped right open. If the tight-lid theory is true, Angie could be married within a year—with a little effort. And a little help from her friends….

Men's roles in building gender equality are currently on the public agenda. Across the globe, there are growing efforts to engage men and boys in building more equitable relations with women and girls. Programs that engage with men have proliferated in fields such as violence prevention, sexual and reproductive health, parenting, education, and work. The last decade has seen the emergence of national and global campaigns, initiatives by international agencies, and scholarly research. Engaging Men in Building Gender Equality brings together the key discussions and evaluations of this field. Engaging Men in Building Gender Equality contributes to the positive impact of efforts to engage men in progress towards gender equality. Some chapters' contributions are practical, exploring the promise and problems of this work. These chapters are authored by educators, activists, and researchers, and highlight valuable or innovative programs and initiatives and the lessons learned from these. Other chapters' contributions are more conceptual and political, inviting more thoughtful and critical understandings of men, masculinities, and the question of men's involvements in feminism. In these contributions, leading writers in the field explore how to understand men and masculinities - how to make sense of the meanings given to manhood, the lives men lead, and the changing patterns of men's and women's relations. The book has a global reach. Some chapters offer frameworks and insights applicable to work regarding men and gender across the globe, while other chapters present case studies from particular countries or regions. Engaging Men in Building Gender Equality bridges the gap between contemporary scholarship on men and gender, on the one hand, and practical work with men on the other. The book will be of interest to a wide range of researchers, advocates, educators, and professionals from universities, governments, local and international organisations, and community agencies. It offers a timely examination of an area of policy, programming, and research which is growing rapidly.

This book will help practitioners overcome one of the leading challenges in couples therapy: working effectively with the male partner. Men have unique needs and psychological issues that many clinicians may not recognize or know how to address. This volume presents chapters by the leading practitioners associated with current therapeutic models, including Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy, Imago Relationship Therapy, Integrated Behavioral Couple Therapy, and more. Using in-depth case examples, they demonstrate how their approaches can be adapted to be "male-sensitive" and respond to the ambivalence so many men experience about couples work. Special topics are also addressed, including infidelity, cultural diversity, working with veterans, and fathering issues. This book will enrich therapists’ work with couples, making treatment a welcoming experience for both partners and the treatment process more gratifying for the therapist.

Gender-based violence is a global phenomenon which affects millions worldwide. However, despite the increasing attention which is now paid to this violence by policy makers data seem to indicate that these efforts are not having as great an impact as may have been hoped. In all countries of the world, reports of gender-related violence remain elevated, whilst many incidents of such violence probably remain unreported due to fear of stigma or reprisals for those who are victims. One of the problems in tackling gender-based violence has been that for too long men have been ignored as part of the solution. Men are often labelled as perpetrators of violence, but they are perhaps too infrequently considered also as potential victims, or as partners and actors in the fight against violence. Constructions of masculinities are not adequately studied to analyse how dominant forms of masculinities may contribute to cycles of violence, and may also oppress and traumatise men themselves. This volume aims to address critically the issues of men, masculinity and gender-based violence, asking how men can be fully engaged in the prevention of gender-based violence, and how this engagement can strengthen prevention initiatives.

Engaging Boys and Men in Sexual Assault Prevention: Theory, Research and Practice explores sexual assault prevention programs for boys and men. Following an ecosystemic perspective, the book examines individual risk and protective factors, discusses initiatives to prevent sexual aggression (i.e., bystander intervention programs, given their use among men), covers programs that specifically seek to engage boys and men in sexual assault prevention, presents key risk and protective factors for sexual aggression (i.e., healthy masculinity, rape myth acceptance), and describes the need and rationale for sexual assault prevention efforts. Addresses current challenges and controversies in the field of sexual assault prevention Explores existing individual-level workshops and media-based interventions that address men’s violence against women Reviews the association between traditional masculine norms and sexual violence perpetration Discusses international sexual assault prevention programs that engage boys and men Highlight how aspects of hypermasculinity strongly correlate with sexual aggression Provides an overview of research that examines risk factors for sexual aggression Synthesizes the conceptualization of rape myths, current assessments of rape myths, and examines how rape myths function as a risk factor for perpetration
