This book gives an update on recent developments in the mentioned areas of modern engineering design application. Different engineering disciplines such as mechanical, materials, computer and process engineering provide the foundation for the design and development of improved structures, materials and processes. The modern design cycle is characterized by an interaction of different disciplines and a strong shift to computer-based approaches where only a few experiments are performed for verification purposes. A major driver for this development is the increased demand for cost reduction, which is also connected to environmental demands. In the transportation industry (e.g. automotive), this is connected with the demand for higher fuel efficiency, which is related to the operational costs and the lower harm for the environment. One way to fulfil such requirements are lighter structures and/or improved processes for energy conversion. Another emerging area is the interaction of classical engineering with the health, medical, and environmental sectors.

This book contains papers presented at the sixth International Conference on Application of Artificial Intelligence in Engineering held in Oxford, UK in was held in Southampton, UK July 1991. The first conference in this series the second in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA in 1987, the third in 1986, 1989 in Palo Alto, California, USA in 1988, the fourth in Cambridge, UK in and the fifth in Boston, Massachusetts, USA in 1990. The conference series has now established itself as the unique forum for the presentation of the latest research, development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) in all fields of engineering. Consequently, books of conference proceedings provide a historical record of the application of AI in engineering design, analysis, simulation, planning, scheduling, monitoring, control, diagnosis, reliability and quality, as well as in robotics and manufacturing systems, from the early beginnings to mature applications of today. Whilst previously the field was dominated by knowledge-based systems, in this latest volume, for the first time, a significant proportion of papers cover the paradigms of neural networks and genetic algorithms. Learning and self organising behaviour of systems based on these paradigms are particularly important in engineering applications. From a large number of submitted proposals over sixty papers have been selected by members of the Advisory Committee who acted as referees. Pa pers have been grouped under the following headings.

MILNE Intelligent Applications Ltd The papers in this volume are the Application Papers presented at ES98, the Eighteenth International Conference of the British Computer Society's Specialist Group on Expert Systems. This year has been yet another "applications" success for the conference with this volume containing seventeen papers describing either deployed applications or emerging applications. All these documented case studies provide clear evidence of the success of AI technology in solving real business problems. Six of these papers were nominated for the Best Application Award during the review process. These nominations were then reviewed by the members of the Programme Committee to select the winning paper. The papers in the volume were subject to refereeing by at least two referees. All papers which were controversial for some reason were discussed in depth by the Application Programme Committee. Ten referees from the industrial and commercial sector and nine referees from the academic sector assisted me in reviewing the papers. The review form asked the referee to score the papers according to a number of dimensions, to rate it overall, and to offer critical comments to me, and to the authors. It also asks the referee to score their expertise in the area of each paper they review. Only reviews from 'expert' referees are used.
