This book focuses on the Visa Information System (VIS): a large-scale data infrastructure interconnecting a multiplicity of state authorities that enact border security and migration management in the European Union. The VIS is embedded within a setting of pan-European IT systems that filter international mobility, identify threatening elements, hamper the travels of poor, racialized, and alienated subjects, while at the same time facilitate the circulation of those expected to generate financial and other kinds of capital. The book examines the engineering of the VIS by analyzing how it was designed before its deployment in the field of border security, and how it is maintained to ensure continuous and secure operation. It illustrates how engineering processes that render the VIS functional are not just technoscientific, but inherently political, as they (re)configure and maintain the power to govern international mobility by digital means.

"Engineering Digitised Borders offers a rich and detailed examination of how the Visa Information System was produced and maintained. By telescoping into the detailed micropractices of digitised borders, it demonstrates a remarkable ability to show us why these actions matter politically, and what is at stake when humans and materials combine to enact border decisions. Glouftsios's analysis of VIS is careful, patient and utterly necessary as we debate the transformation of bordering in Europe and beyond." -Debbie Lisle, Professor of International Relations, School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics, Queen's University Belfast, Belfast, UK "What are the digitised borders traversing and stretching Europe today? How and where are they crafted, monitored and maintained? These are important questions which this impressive book answers, making it essential reading not just for scholars of borders and migration but anyone interested in the politics at stake in novel practices of governing territories, populations and mobilities". -William Walters, Professor of Political Sociology, Carleton University, Canada This book focuses on the Visa Information System (VIS): a large-scale data infrastructure interconnecting a multiplicity of state authorities that enact border security and migration management in the European Union. The digitalisation of border security is reshaping migration governance across Europe and beyond, transforming border areas through the deployment of advanced surveillance technologies. Greece and Spain, as critical gateways, have become testing grounds for drones and remote monitoring systems designed to enforce borders from afar. In a walk down extreme border zones, this book delves into the rise of digital patrolling, a key facet of this transformation, offering a multidisciplinary analysis grounded in human rights law, comparative migration law, and critical migration studies. By exploring how digital patrolling impacts the ‘filtering’ of human mobility, it uncovers the legal and societal fallouts of Europe’s shifting borders, highlighting the tension between security measures and fundamental rights.

This book provides insights on how emerging technosciences come together with new forms of governance and ethical questioning. Combining science and technologies and ethics approaches, it looks at the emergence of three key technoscientific domains - body enhancement technologies, biometrics and technologies for the production of space -exploring how human bodies and minds, the movement of citizens and space become matters of technoscientific governance. The emergence of new and digital technologies pose new challenges for representative democracy and existing forms of citizenship. As citizens encounter and have to adapt to technological change in their everyday life, new forms of conviviality and contestation emerge. This book is a key reference for scholars interested in the governance of emerging technosciences in the fields of science and technology studies and ethics.

Digital Mobilities And Smart Borders written by Louis Everuss and has been published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-07-22 with Social Science categories.

From smart gates and drone patrols to e-visas and mobile GPS apps, digital technologies are becoming a ubiquitous feature of state borders and travel. The embedding of digital technologies into bordering and travel processes is reshaping the ways people move around the world, as well as the means sovereign states use to control and facilitate that movement. Digital Mobilities studies these changes and examines how ‘digitisation’ is remaking the very fabric of state sovereignty, territory, and borders. Some of the core bordering and travel transitions prompted by digitisation that are examined in Digital Mobilities include the spatial and temporal reorganisation of borders; the algorithmic assessment of travellers as ‘data doubles’; the reformulation of border agency, or who or what performs the border; the digital augmentation of international travel; and the new tensions and conflicts arising between smart borders and digital mobilities. Understanding these transitions is essential for policy makers, advocates, and members of the public to comprehend both the exceptional opportunities and monumental risks posed by the embedding of digital technologies into borders and travel.
