This synthesis report will be of interest to state, local, and federal agency pavement materials, design, and construction engineers, as well as pavement research engineers and scientists. Those with supervisory oversight for pavement programs will also find it of interest. It describes the current practice for methods to achieve rut-resistant durable pavements. The synthesis documents current experience with permanent deformation of asphalt pavements and identifies methods to improve performance. Information for the synthesis was collected by surveying U.S. and Canadian transportation agencies and by conducting a literature search using domestic and international sources. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the extent of the rutting problem on the National Highway System, pavement mixture design issues, and the design of rut-resistant mixtures. In addition, alternate mixture types, including stone matrix asphalt and porous asphalt, are discussed, as well as international approaches to mixture design. Finally, the construction of rut-resistant mixtures, including the role of quality control and quality assurance methods, are discussed. A summary of permanent deformation causes and solutions is included in the appendix.

The design and construction of “long and deep” tunnels, i.e. tunnels under mountains, characterised by either considerable length and/or overburden, represent a considerable challenge. The scope of this book is not to instruct how to design and construct such tunnels but to share a method to identify the potential hazards related to the process of designing and constructing long and deep tunnels, to produce a relevant comprehensive analysis and listing, to quantify the probability and consequences, and to design proper mitigation measures and countermeasures. The design, developed using probabilistic methods, is verified during execution by means of the so called Plan for Advance of the Tunnel (PAT) method, which allows adapting the design and control parameters of the future stretches of the tunnel to the results of the stretches already finished, using the monitoring data base. Numerous criteria are given to identify the key parameters, necessary for the PAT procedure. Best practices of excavation management with the help of real time monitoring and control are also provided. Furthermore cost and time evaluation systems are analysed. Finally, contractual aspects related to construction by contract are investigated, for best development and application of models more appropriate for tunnelling-construction contracts. Good performance for a highway, like any other product, is satisfaction of the user or customer. Most asphalt pavement users are well satisfied as long as the ride is smooth and the cost is low. The major purpose of this paper is to determine those engineering properties which result in a durable, smooth, low-cost asphalt pavement and to show how they can be controlled to assure continuing satisfaction of the road user. These properties are identified as being those that eliminate or reduce low-temperature cracking, reflection cracking, fatigue cracking, distortion and disintegration. Distortion or structural weakness can be eliminated by increasing the top size of the aggregate in the region of the weakness or increasing the thickness of the pavement depending on the type of distortion. Disintegration is controlled through softening the asphalt, increasing its content and the quality of the aggregate. Cracking is reduced through a combination of the foregoing factors. Proper management of these factors assures long term satisfaction.

The contents are linked to the Rilem TC241 - MCD scientific activities and the proceedings of the 8th RILEM International Conference on Mechanisms of Cracking and Debonding in Pavements (MCD2016). MCD2016 was hosted by Ifsttar and took place in Nantes, France, on June 7-9, 2016. In their lifetime, pavements undergo degradation due to different mechanisms of which cracking is among the most important ones.
