The ?rst workshop “Engineering Societies in the Agents World” (ESAW) was held in August 2000, in conjunction with the 14th European Conference on Arti?cial Intelligence (ECAI 2000) in Berlin. It was launched by a group of - searchers who thought that the design and development of MASs (multi-agent systems) not only needed adequate theoretical foundations but also a call for new techniques, methodologies and infrastructures to develop MASs as arti?cial societies. The second ESAW was co-located with the European Agent Summer School (ACAI 2001) in Prague, and mostly focused on logics and languages, middleware, infrastructures and applications. In Madrid, the third ESAW c- centrated on models and methodologies and took place with the “Cooperative Information Agents” workshop (CIA 2002). The fourth ESAW in London was the ?rst one that ran as a stand-alone event: apart from the usual works on methodologies and models, it also stressed the issues of applications and m- tidisciplinary models. Based on the success of previous ESAWs, and also given that the di?cult challenges in the construction of arti?cial societies are not yet fully addressed, the ?fth ESAW workshop was organized in the same spirit as its predecessors. Inparticular,ESAW2004tookplaceattheIRITlaboratoryoftheUniversit ́ e “Paul Sabatier” (Toulouse, France), at the end of October 2004. It was not - located with any other scienti?c event, in the same way as ESAW 2003. ESAW 2004 remained committed to the use of the notion of MASs as the seeds for animated, constructive and highly interdisciplinary discussions about techno- gies, methodologiesandtoolsfortheengineeringofcomplexdistributedsystems.

The 10th international workshop “Engineering Societies in the Agents’ World” (ESAW 2009), was held in Utrecht, The Netherlands, during November 18–20, 2009. In the tradition of its predecessors, ESAW 2009 was committed to the idea of multi-agent systems (MAS) as highly interconnected societies of agents, paying particular attention to the social aspects, methodologies and software infrastructures that tackle the emergent complexities of MAS. The idea for the ESAW workshop series was born 10 years ago, in 1999, among the members of the working group on “Communication, Coordination and Collaboration” of AgentLink, the 1st European Network of Excellence on Agent-Based Computing, out of a critical discussion about the general mi- set of the agents community. Central to this discussion is the need for proper consideration of systematic aspects of MAS, acknowledging the importance of a multi-disciplinary approach, that takes into account the social, environmental and technological perspectives. These issues that are as actual today as they were in 1999, which is con?rmed by the steady interest in the ESAW workshop series that previous editions took place in: – Berlin, Germany, 2000 (LNAI 1972) – Prague, Czech Republic, 2001 (LNAI 2203) – Madrid, Spain, 2002 (LNAI 2577) – London, UK, 2003 (LNAI 3071) – Toulouse, France, 2004 (LNAI 3451) – Kusadasi, Turkey, 2005 (LNAI 3963) – Dublin, Ireland, 2006 (LNAI 4457) – Athens, Greece, 2007 (LNAI 4995) – Saint-Etienne, France, 2008 (LNAI 5485) This10thworkshopwasdevotedtothediscussionoftechnologies,methodologies and models for the engineering of complex applications based on MAS, and broughttogetherresearchersandcontributionsfrombothwithinandoutsidethe agents’?eld–fromsoftwareengineering, distributedsystems, socialsciences, and

Handbook On Agent Oriented Design Processes written by Massimo Cossentino and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-03-28 with Computers categories.
To deal with the flexible architectures and evolving functionalities of complex modern systems, the agent metaphor and agent-based computing are often the most appropriate software design approach. As a result, a broad range of special-purpose design processes has been developed in the last several years to tackle the challenges of these specific application domains. In this context, in early 2012 the IEEE-FIPA Design Process Documentation Template SC0097B was defined, which facilitates the representation of design processes and method fragments through the use of standardized templates, thus supporting the creation of easily sharable repositories and facilitating the composition of new design processes. Following this standardization approach, this book gathers the documentations of some of the best-known agent-oriented design processes. After an introductory section, describing the goal of the book and the existing IEEE FIPA standard for design process documentation, thirteen processes (including the widely known Open UP, the de facto standard in object-oriented software engineering) are documented by their original creators or other well-known scientists working in the field. As a result, this is the first work to adopt a standard, unified descriptive approach for documenting different processes, making it much easier to study the individual processes, to rigorously compare them, and to apply them in industrial projects. While there are a few books on the market describing the individual agent-oriented design processes, none of them presents all the processes, let alone in the same format. With this handbook, for the first time, researchers as well as professional software developers looking for an overview as well as for detailed and standardized descriptions of design processes will find a comprehensive presentation of the most important agent-oriented design processes, which will be an invaluable resource when developing solutions in various application areas.

The concept of an intelligent agent – a computational system capable of performing certain tasks autonomously – derived from the growing potential of digital computers in the mid 20th century and had been widely adopted by the early 1990s. Partly in parallel with this concept, the perspective of ambient intelligence (AmI) emerged in the late 1990s. Agent technology and AmI have many similarities, and the main purpose of this book is to provide an overview of the state-of-the-art of the scientific area that integrates these two. The book addresses a wide variety of topics related to agents and AmI, including theoretical, practical, design, implementation, ethical and philosophical issues. The 12 chapters are arranged in four sections. The first consists of three chapters discussing ethical and philosophical issues; the second part explores various approaches that can be used to develop agent-based AmI Systems; the third part contains three chapters that share the goal to endow AmI systems with useful properties like intelligence and adaptivity and the last section presents concrete applications of agent-based AmI systems. This book provides an insight into recent achievements and future challenges at the intersection of agent technology and ambient intelligence and will assist the development of more intelligent, flexible, effective and user-friendly systems as well as posing critical questions about the future of the role of agents within the AmI perspective.
