Engineering Swarms for Cyber-Physical Systems covers the whole design cycle for applying swarm intelligence in Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and guides readers through modeling, design, simulation, and final deployment of swarm systems. The book provides a one-stop-shop covering all relevant aspects for engineering swarm systems. Following a concise introduction part on swarm intelligence and the potential of swarm systems, the book explains modeling methods for swarm systems embodied in the interplay of physical swarm agents. Examples from several domains including robotics, manufacturing, and search and rescue applications are given. In addition, swarm robotics is further covered by an analysis of available platforms, computation models and applications. It also treats design methods for cyber-physical swarm applications including swarm modeling approaches for CPSs and classical implementations of behaviors as well as approaches based on machine-learning. A chapter on simulation covers simulation requirements and addresses the dichotomy between abstract and detailed physical simulation models. A special feature of the chapters is the hands-on character by providing programming examples with the different engineering aspects whenever possible, thus allowing for fast translation of concepts to actual implementation. Overall, the book is meant to give a creative researcher or engineer the inspiration, theoretical background, and practical knowledge to build swarm systems of CPSs. It also serves as a text for students in science and engineering.

This volume investigates a number of issues needed to develop a modular, effective, versatile, cost effective, pedagogically-embedded, user-friendly, and sustainable online laboratory system that can deliver its true potential in the national and global arenas. This allows individual researchers to develop their own modular systems with a level of creativity and innovation while at the same time ensuring continuing growth by separating the responsibility for creating online laboratories from the responsibility for overseeing the students who use them. The volume first introduces the reader to several system architectures that have proven successful in many online laboratory settings. The following chapters then describe real-life experiences in the area of online laboratories from both technological and educational points of view. The volume further collects experiences and evidence on the effective use of online labs in the context of a diversity of pedagogical issues. It also illustrates successful online laboratories to highlight best practices as case studies and describes the technological design strategies, implementation details, and classroom activities as well as learning from these developments. Finally the volume describes the creation and deployment of commercial products, tools and services for online laboratory development. It also provides an idea about the developments that are on the horizon to support this area.

Cyber Physical Systems Decision Making Mechanisms And Applications written by Kostas Siozios and has been published by River Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-11-11 with Technology & Engineering categories.

As systems continue to evolve they rely less on human decision-making and more on computational intelligence. This trend in conjunction with the available technologies for providing advanced sensing, measurement, process control, and communication lead towards the new field of the CyberPhysical System (CPS). CyberPhysical systems are expected to play a major role in the design and development of future engineering platforms with new capabilities that far exceed today's levels of autonomy, functionality and usability. Although these systems exhibit remarkable characteristics, their design and implementation is a challenging issue, as numerous (heterogeneous) components and services have to be appropriately modeled and simulated together. The problem of designing efficient CPS becomes far more challenging in case the target system has to meet also real-time constraints. CyberPhysical Systems: Decision Making Mechanisms and Applications describes essential theory, recent research and large-scale user cases that addresses urgent challenges in CPS architectures. In particular, it includes chapters on: Decision making for large scale CPSModeling of CPS with emphasis at the control mechanismsHardware/software implementation of the control mechanismsFault-tolerant and reliability issues for the control mechanismsCyberPhysical user-cases that incorporate challenging decision making

Collectively working robot teams can solve a problem more efficiently than a single robot, while also providing robustness and flexibility to the group. Swarm robotics model is a key component of a cooperative algorithm that controls the behaviors and interactions of all individuals. The robots in the swarm should have some basic functions, such as sensing, communicating, and monitoring, and satisfy the following properties: Autonomy—Individuals that create the swarm robotic system are autonomous robots. They are independent and can interact with each other and the environment.Large number—They are in large number, enabling cooperation.Scalability and robustness—A new unit can be easily added to the system, so the system can be easily scaled. A greater number of units improves the performance of the system. The system is quite robust to the loss of some units, as some units still remain to perform, although the system will not perform to its maximum capabilities.Decentralized coordination—The robots communicate with each other and with their environment to make final decisions.Flexibility—The swarm robotic system has the ability to generate modularized solutions to different tasks.
