Excerpt from England and the English, Vol. 1 of 2 IT is only to express my thanks to certain kind correspondents for the assistance they have afforded me, that I shall delay the Reader from the work now before him. To one gentleman ofthe highest scientific attainments and reputation I am indebted for many suggestions, of which I have availed myself in my brief view of the State of Science - to another gentleman, qualified, perhaps before all men living, to judge profoundly of the philosophy of Bentham, I am also indebted for considerable aid in the sketch of that remarkable writer's moral and legislative codes which will be found in the Appendix to the second volume; and to the taste and critical know ledge of a third gentleman I owe many obligations in the chapter devoted to the survey of the State of the Arts amongst us at this time. To the last gentleman my acknowledgments are perhaps the greater, because he has suffered me, in his general approbation of my theories, to apply a part of his. Excerpt from A Short History of England, Vol. 1 of 2 In this brief history of England I have endeavored to present within the compass of about four hundred pages the main features of England's story from the earliest times to the present day. It retains, on a smaller scale, the essential characteristics of my larger work, with many omissions of details and some additions, chiefly of a geographical and biographical character. The aim of the book is to be instructive as well as interesting. In it I have tried to tell a clear and simple story, avoiding technical expressions, and yet passing over no important features of the history that are necessary for the proper understanding of the subject. The narrative is made as continuous as possible, that the reader may follow in unbroken sequence the thread of the story. It is accompanied with a large number of newly selected illustrations, and an ample supply of maps and chronological tables. The elaborate bibliographies contained in the larger work have been omitted, and only a brief but selective list of the best books of moderate length has been retained. The history has been brought down to date in matters of scholarship as well as chronology, and contains many opinions and statements not to be found in the larger work. The book traces in rapid survey the development of the people and institutions of England from Anglo-Saxon times to the close of the year 1911, and shows by what steps the primitive organization of a semi-tribal people has been transformed into the highly complicated political and social structure of the United Kingdom and the British Empire. Excerpt from The History of the English Constitution, Vol. 1 of 2 The History of the Constitution of England has hitherto only been written with regard to the Middle Ages, and separate centuries since the Reformation. In venturing to draw a picture of the thousand years' Constitutional History of such a nation, I must necessarily begin with an apology in order to explain the shortcomings and inequalities of my work, and in some measure to justify them in the eyes of the benevolent reader. Excerpt from The Making of England, Vol. 1 of 2 Britain, and in wmch their political and social life took the form which it still retains. The centuries of administrative organization which stretch from Ecgberht to Edward the First, the age of full national development which extends from Edward's day to our own, only become intelligible to us when we have fully grasped this age of national formation. I cannot but feel, therefore, that it is no slight misfortune that such a period should remain comparatively unknown, and that its struggles, which were in reality the birth-throes of our national life, should be still to most English men, as they were to Milton, mere battles of kites and of crows. Excerpt from A History of England, Vol. 1 of 2: From the Defeat of the Armada to the Death of Elizabeth, With an Account of English Institutions During the Later Sixteenth and Early Seventeenth Centuries The second object, that of describing the institutions of the time, is an efi'ort to give a clearer impression of central and local government, industry, the church and its opponents, intellectual life and social customs at the culmination of a period of especial interest; a period which has the additional claim to attention that it was the eve of the settlement of America, and that many of these institutions were about to become the basis of a new form of society beyond the sea. Customs change more slowly than men, and it has therefore been considered defensible to seek for illustrations of these institutions during a period extending somewhat before and after the fifteen years of which the narrative is given. The chapters describing institutions have been introduced among those devoted more particularly to narrative in the order that has seemed most clear. A word may be said concerning the use of footnotes. The large number of individual statements that have been necce sary in so detailed an account has required many references. Excerpt from The History of the Royal Family of England, Vol. 1 of 2 To write anything like a complete history of the English Royal Family would be to write an extremely comprehensive History of England, as there have been few events in which England has been concerned in which her reigning family have not taken an active part. I have no such ambitious or far-reaching intention. What I propose to do is to give a short account of what I may call the private, as opposed to the public, history of the several Kings and Queens, of their children, and of such of their immediate descendants or relatives as have played any part in English History, or have lived in England; and in doing this I wish to avoid, as far as possible, reference to those great political events which arc in the province of regular historians, and are more or less known to all readers. Many of those of whom it will be necessary to speak are persons whose lives are bound up in the history of their country, whose minutest actions, so far as they arc known, are recorded in many histories and biographies, and over whose characters and motives there have been prolonged, and often acrimonious, discussions. Excerpt from The English at Home, Vol. 1 of 2 While recently noticing an absurd libel upon England, written by one Larcher, and produced under the auspices of Emile de Girardin, the Athen um pertinently remarked that "a work like the one before us is calculated to do as much moral harm as the commercial treaty can do material good." The publication of the present volumes will, I trust, prove that all Frenchmen do not agree with Mr. Larcher, but that there are some among them moved by a generous desire to draw more closely together the good understanding which ought to exist between the two great Western Powers.
