Based on a 1.7-million-word corpus of 160 research articles from both soft and hard knowledge fields, this book sets out to explore how a particular type of noun – namely, the metadiscursive noun – is rhetorically used to mediate writer-reader interaction in disciplinary writing. Analysts of academic discourse have come to regard hedges, reporting verbs, directives and so on as forming part of a wide repertoire of interactive features available to authors, suggesting a variety of terms, including evaluation, stance, appraisal, and metadiscourse. One aspect which has been less fully explored, however, is the rhetorical role nouns play in achieving writers’ persuasive goals. This book fills the gap by proposing a particular type of nouns as metadiscursive nouns (as in “this supports our hypotheses that youth are more likely to co-offend when neighbourhoods are less disadvantaged”). The author aims to find out how writers employ metadiscursive nouns to engage and interact with readers in academic prose, raising theoretical and pedagogical implications and how they can be applied in the teaching of academic writing. This book will be of particular interest to students and scholars working in the areas of English for academic purposes, corpus studies, academic writing, and linguistics in general.

Concept analysis is an established genre of inquiry in nursing, introduced in the 1970s. Currently, over 100 concept studies are published annually, yet the methods used within this field have rarely been questioned. In Concept Analysis in Nursing: A New Approach, Paley provides a critical analysis of the philosophical assumptions that underpin nursing’s concept analysis methods. He argues, provocatively, that there are no such things as concepts, as traditionally conceived. Drawing on Wittgenstein and Construction Grammar, the book first makes a case for dispensing with the traditional concept of a ‘concept’, and then provides two examples of a new approach, examining the use of ‘hope’ and ‘moral distress’. Casting doubt on the assumption that ‘hope’ always stands for an ‘inner’ state of the person, the book shows that the word’s function varies with the grammatical construction it appears in. Similarly, it argues that ‘moral distress’ is not the name of a mental state, but a normative classification used to bolster a narrative concerning nursing’s identity. In recent decades, corpus linguistics has experienced tremendous development in the Hispanic world, along two opposite but complementary approaches: increase in corpus size (corpus linguistics as Big Data) and improvement in document selection and data annotation (corpus linguistics as High Quality Data). The first approach has led to the creation of massive corpora such as EsTenTen; at the same time, it has promoted the use of the web and social networks as corpora. The second perspective gives rise to specialized corpora such as Post Scriptum or Oralia Diacrónica del español (ODE). The contributions gathered in this volume combine both methods in order to exploit their advantages and to overcome their possible limitations. On the one hand, it addresses the creation and design of small corpora focused on data quality; on the other hand, it offers case studies that make use of both specialized corpora and massive data extracted from the web. Highlighting the complementary nature of both methods is the main idea of this book.
