Excerpt from English Composition: A Manual of Theory and Practice It is not too much to say that, for a very long time, the soundness of the theory which assumes that the long and laborious study of the dead languages of Greece and old Rome, must needs result in a knowledge of the living tongue of England, has been taken for granted. But, surely, actual experience has taught us, on the contrary, that, to acquire a working knowledge of a language by any method, other than the simple plan of studying the language itself, is (in fact) a thing impossible. The educational authorities of France and Germany have already arrived at this conclusion; and their school curriculum provides carefully graduated methods of instruction, ranging from the elements of the national tongue, to a complete system of the theory and practice of composition therein; methods which (as every teacher knows) do indisputably achieve their end: that of enabling the pupil to speak and to write his own language with facility, correctness, even with elegance. And, in so far as I have been able to adapt certain points in these methods to a different genius and tradition, I have been glad to borrow them. Excerpt from Practical English Composition It is the purpose of this book to accomplish four things for the student: (1) to give him continually increasing power in original composition; (2) to train him in habits of accuracy in mechanical form (spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, etc.); (3) to develop his interest in good literature; and (4) to stimulate his interest in the affairs of the world in which he lives. From the beginning of the book to the end, students are required to do creative work and are trained to select, arrange, and express ideas so as to make the best use of what they know. The method of teaching is inductive. Models are used in such a way as to encourage and to develop original thought and expression. No blind imitation of models is possible if the method of the book is followed. This requires persistent effort along definitely indicated lines. Beginning with very simple work, the exercises gradually increase in difficulty in both subject matter and technical requirement. The assignments for student practice are varied and very extensive, ranging from the practical to the theoretical, from matters of everyday experience to matters of imagination and fancy. Excerpt from Essentials of English Composition Sir Philip Sidney says of the lawyer that "our wickedness maketh him necessary, and necessity maketh him honorable." Something of the kind, I suppose most teachers would agree, might be said of textbooks of composition. Whether or not necessity makes them honorable, our deficiencies make them necessary. The best teacher of composition I have known did not use a text-book; and if we could all teach like Dean Briggs, we might wisely make a bonfire of the books. As matters stand, however, they are generally regarded as a necessary evil. On another point, I believe, a majority of teachers would agree. Experience has shown, if it has shown anything, that the amount of rhetorical theory which most students can assimilate and put into practice is small. The average college freshman finds it extremely difficult to grasp even the simplest abstract idea; the most that we can reasonably hope is that he may be induced to lay firm hold upon a few basic principles. To multiply abstractions and distinctions is to confuse him hopelessly. If the study of rhetorical theory in the freshman course were an end in itself, we might still, for the sake of the best students, be justified in presenting it elaborately and in detail.
