Excerpt from A Guide to British Historical Fiction NO attempt need be made to demonstrate the value of historical fiction as a handmaiden to history proper. Prompted by the consideration that teachers of History have rarely sufficient time to read or to search for suitable novels to recommend to their pupils, the authors have prepared this guide in the hope that it Will be found useful to teachers in Secondary and Elementary Schools, and by students of History generally. The list, which is representative and not exhaustive, has been compiled with a view to illustrating every phase of British History to which reference is usually made in an ordinary School course. In the case of events which might be termed historical landmarks, a wider range of choice has been presented, and efforts have been made to include books which treat of the events from different, and often conflicting, points of View. In certain periods, mediocre works have, faute de mieux, found a place, while in others, e.g., the Civil War, the Revolution, the 'forty-five, the 'ninety-eight, the task has been that of selection rather than that of investigation. Some works which are out of print have been included, but libraries - private and public - are still stocked with many of these the same consideration has led to the inclusion of most of the works of Ainsworth, James and other standard authors, whose volumes decorate - and, it is to be feared, Often gather dust on the bookshelves of many English households. In the late 19th Century it has been necessary to tread warily, and novels dealing with controversial and debatable questions have been largely excluded. In conclusion, it should be observed that perfect accuracy is not claimed for the dates assigned to the books: they are intended to point out rather than to point the period. Excerpt from English History in Short Stories This little book is not designed to be a History of England. It is, first, a compendium of facts about England, its history, government, and antiquities, - facts which all English-speaking people ought to know, and which are not readily accessible to those Americans who do not have good libraries at hand. It contains, secondly, a series of sketches of each of the English monarchs; not histories of their reigns or complete biographies, but estimates of the historical importance of each. The English kings previous to the Hanoverians are the central figures of English history. The dates and other facts here given have been collated with the greatest care. The intelligent reader need not be informed that Freeman, J. R. Green, Pearson, and others are entirely reconstructing English history, and fresh estimates of men and events are resulting. Excerpt from Revolutions in English History, Vol. 1 In taking up such a theme as the Revolutions in English History, it is probable that no two writers would be agreed as to the best method of dealing with it-or as to the principle that should determine the selection of material, and where to stop. On these points, and on many beside, I have to throw myself on the candour of the reader. The course I have taken has been chosen after the best thought I could bestow on the subject. In the further prosecution of my object, I hope to avail myself freely of the rich material in the State Paper Office, still in manuscript, and which, thanks to the present Master of the Rolls, is becoming more accessible every day for the pur poses of history. Excerpt from History of the English People, Vol. 1 of 5 IT was a favourite wish of my husband's to see English History interpreted and illustrated by pictures which should tell us how men and things appeared to the lookers-on of their own day, and how contemporary observers aimed at representing them. This new edition of his book is an attempt to carry out such an idea. It has seemed most fitting to choose for the purpose the work of the writer who by the brilliance of his historic imagination has recovered for Englishmen many regions of the past left waste and neglected, and brought to light costly treasures that had long lain hidden in some of its most obscure corners. The Short History, with its vivid realization of all that goes to make up the life of a People, lends itself in a singular way to illustrations which are themselves the work of the people century by century, and the wisdom of the historian is constantly justified as the details of some vivid description, or the significance with which some in cident is clothed, or the new measure and proportion given to facts that before his time were common and despised, are finely emphasized by the work of old scribes or artists to whom all these things were present realities. Excerpt from Cameos From English History: England and Spain The present volume of Cameos has not, to my regret, been able to go beyond the period of the great struggle between England and Spain. I had hoped to have made it cover the two wars more or less of Religion that ensued, namely the Thirty Years' War, and the Great Rebellion but events were too crowded, and characters too defined to allow of compression, and it seemed better to close with the deaths of the two great actors in the mighty scene, Philip and Elizabeth, than to continue until peace was fully and technically made. Excerpt from Stories From English History: From B. C. 55 to A. D. 1901 IN writing this book an endeavor has been made to interest boys and girls in English history by stories of some of its great events and of some of the great men who adorn its pages. This aim being kept steadily in view throughout, it seemed right to select certain important incidents and characters, and to deal with them in some detail and in as interesting a way as possible, rather than to load the pages with a multitude of names and dates, in the vain effort to crowd into a few pages a continu ous history which should be at once full and inter esting. Yet it is believed that no important events or personages have been entirely neglected, while particular attention has been directed toward those of chief significance to American boys and gifls. Excerpt from Stories From English History Can/s. It has been a great day at the school, grandfather. The Governor himself came in to see the classes. He heard us recite. Only think! I was chosen to do it in my Class, though there are at least six of the boys Who are older than I. Grandfather. What was the book, and what was the piece? But very likely I have never heard it. C. Oh yes you know it. You have heard me say it again and again. I don't think that there is any piece that I like quite so well. It was the Shield of Aeneas, out of Virgil.
