English for Occupational Purposes examines the field of teaching English in occupational settings as a particular instance of general workplace training and development. It is the first book to unite scholarship on workplace English with general training. The book uses case studies and surveys from various occupational contexts to ask whether English for Occupational Purposes and general training use the same "language" in articulating their curricular and instructional development. The main focus of the study is on business organizations, specifically in South Korea, where English has become an integral part of business both in the workplace, in business to business negotiations, and in professional training. This fascinating monograph will be of interest to researchers in English for specific purposes and applied linguistics as well as scholars of workplace education.

English at the Workplace, a coursebook prescribed for students of Stream B at the University of Delhi, has been specially prepared to enhance the proficiency of those students who have not yet gained the required competence in using English confidently. It recognizes - and builds upon - the fact that these learners are not children and have some mastery over at least one language and some understanding of how languages function. It utilizes to the maximum the resources that the adult learner (as opposed to the young learner) brings to second language learning. Therefore, the units of this coursebook are not centred around content or themes that merely provide the context for language practice and use. Instead, the units are built around issues that are crucial to the process of language learning: what are the things that a good learner does to maximize learning; how does culture affect the way in which we use languages; how do different languages mark intimacy or show respect. Students think, read, speak and write about these issues and in the process not only sharpen their analytical and cognitive skills but their language proficiency as well. Research has shown that adults learn better by monitoring their speech while young learners profit more from drills and repetition. If the adult learner understands these issues, his mastery over the language becomes that much easier and that much more confident. This coursebook is, in many ways, a basic primer to linguistics. English at the Workplace also recognizes that at least in language learning the teacher does not help his pupil to learn anything by saving them the trouble of trying to do it themselves . This book, too, will work best if the teacher lets learners actually use the language by reading, writing, speaking and listening in pairs and groups within the class. The classroom is a place where genuine and real use of language can and should take place. Moving away from controlled and the

Widgets Inc.: A task-based course in workplace English is a business communication course for English as a second or foreign language (ESL/EFL) classes. It is the second edition of the course, which was originally published by Pearson Longman (Hong Kong: 2008).Students simulate being interns working for a fictional company called Widgets Inc. The course is designed to be compatible with a range of English proficiency levels (from CEFR A2 to C1), including mixed-level classes. It requires a class of 12 or more motivated adults who meet for between 22-45 hours (fifteen to thirty 90-minute periods). Students are placed into teams and follow a project-based product development cycle across 6 stages. Stage 1 introduces the company and a cast of fictional characters who interact with the class via online streamed video. Stage 2 is an R&D stage in which students brainstorm product ideas. In Stage 3, they are given several product ideas proposed by a different team, and must select the best one to go into production. In Stage 4, they are given another team's selected product and must perform market research on it. In Stage 5 they prepare a proposed marketing campaign for yet another product passed from a different team. Stage 6 is the conclusion, in which students prepare a resume and interview for a promotion within the company. Each stage is punctuated by a presentation and/or a writing task which is related to the stage's topic. Students are assessed via can-do statements built into the simulation as "employee evaluations" which include self, peer, and instructor assessments. The course features a task-complexity based syllabus rather than the traditional grammar syllabus or functional-notional syllabus.
