It is not surprising that in order to meet the job demands of the future, we need to ensure that students have the knowledge and opportunity to choose from an array of postsecondary options before graduating from high school. Particularly as our society continues to increase in diversity, providing access to college and career choices for all students is imperative. However, there are many barriers that keep students from reaching their potential and envisioning a future that is personally and professionally rewarding. Many of these barriers are systemic in nature and others are related to individual circumstances. Regardless from where the barriers stem, school counselors and others who provide postsecondary readiness services to students must advocate, work to create equitable access, and assist with navigating through complex systems. This book compiles information and strategies from experts in the field. Each chapter in this book offers definitions of specific populations, evidence-based culturally responsive counseling strategies including those related to collaboration, case studies and interventions, and opportunities for readers to reflect on their understanding of that population to inspire professional growth. Groups included in this book include students who are experiencing homelessness, students in English Language Learner programs, families experiencing poverty, students with special needs, and many others that school counselors and college advisors will encounter in their career.

This important volume presents the results from a five-year, mixed methods study on the transition from high school to postsecondary education for young adults who, during secondary school, received both English learner and special education services. It aims to improve our understanding of, and thus the supportive service provisions for, the dually identified student population in secondary and higher education settings. The book explores dually identified students’ complex and intersectional experiences, strengths, and needs using multiple methods of inquiry, including the examination of educational transition-focused policies and practices, a comprehensive review of research results, case studies, and comparative analysis of key stakeholder perspectives for this student population. With a focus on equitable, culturally sustaining transition research and practice, the book informs graduate students, researchers, and teacher educators about how to mitigate the effects of historical marginalization, increasing our collective understanding of intersectional experiences and how they shape young adults’ choices as they leave high school and move into young adulthood.

Supporting College Students Of Immigrant Origin written by Blake R. Silver and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-05-31 with Education categories.

Over 5 million college students in the United States – nearly one-in-three students currently enrolled – are of immigrant origin, meaning they are either the children of immigrant parents or guardians and/or immigrants themselves. These students accounted for almost 60% of the growth in higher education enrolment in the 21st century. Nevertheless, there is very little research dedicated to this student population's specific experiences of postsecondary education, with similar absences discernible within the realms of higher education policy and practice. Although college campuses are making important progress in building more inclusive spaces, conversations about climate and student care rarely account for the journeys of students of immigrant origin. Featuring 20 chapters written by more than 50 contributors, this book addresses this glaring omission. The authors examine how students of immigrant origin experience the road to, through, and beyond higher education, while, simultaneously, speaking to evidence-based implications for policy, research, and practice.

"This volume is an inquiry into community college first-year pedagogy and policy at a time when change has not only been called for but also mandated by state lawmakers who financially control public education. It also acknowledges new policies that are eliminating developmental and remedial writing courses while keeping mind that, for most community college students, first-year composition serves as the last course they will take in the English department toward their associate's degree. This volume also serves as a call to action to change the way community colleges attend to faculty concerns. Only by listening to teachers can the concerns discussed in the volume be addressed; it is the teachers who see how societal changes intersect with campus policies and students' lives on a daily basis."--Adapted from back cover.

Amplifying The Curriculum written by Aída Walqui and has been published by Teachers College Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025 with Education categories.

Expanded and revised to include four entirely new chapters, this thoroughly updated edition presents a model for how educators can design high-quality, challenging, and supportive learning opportunities for multilingual learners. Starting with the premise that conceptual, analytic, and language practices develop simultaneously as students engage in disciplinary learning, the authors argue for instruction that amplifies—rather than simplifies—expectations, concepts, texts, and learning tasks. They offer clear guidance for designing well-supported lessons with examples that demonstrate the approach in elementary and secondary classrooms across various subject areas (math, science, language arts, and social studies) and contexts (including newcomer classrooms and a new chapter written in Spanish on instruction in students’ home languages). This popular resource guides teachers through the coherent design of tasks, lessons, and units that invite all students to engage in productive, meaningful, dialogic, and intellectually engaging activity. The book concludes with a discussion of where teachers might begin and how teacher educators, professional development providers, and educational leaders can support them in these efforts. Book Features: Provides discipline-specific examples that are fully unpacked to guide teachers in creating ambitious and supportive learning tasks, lessons, and units of study. Supports teachers in their own instructional design by providing guiding tenets, a framework for designing lessons, and multiple examples in different subject areas. Offers a compelling argument, supported with examples and guidelines, that highlights the centrality of interactions in the development of student academic autonomy. Provides practical guidance grounded in sociocultural/ecological theory, applied linguistics, and theories about effective learning of disciplinary practices. Includes real-life lessons that have been successfully implemented in classrooms with multilingual learners at all levels of language proficiency. “The second edition of this fantastic resource for teachers of ELL–classified students and other multilingual learners extends the authors’ original framework of effective ways to amplify highly engaging academic instruction across grade levels, content areas, and home languages.” —Wayne E. Wright, associate dean for research, graduate programs, and faculty development, Purdue University College of Education
