Excerpt from Essays and Studies by Members of the English Association, Vol. 4 Both printer and actor become students of Kulturgeschichte in the process, though, like Monsieur Jourdain, they may not know it; they are both exploring outlying regions in the field of human culture. But the fact is that the collection in the American University has not been brought together for this reason. It has a far more pretentious purpose than this. It is called a 'dramatic' (not merely a theatrical) museum, and those responsible for its existence have brought together their interesting collection because they believe that these theatrical antiquities are an essential instrument of dramatic criticism. They believe that dramatic literature cannot be intelligently studied without an understanding of all that has gone on in the playhouses of the world from the very beginnings of the drama. The shape of the stage, the scenery, the audience and its characteristics, the lighting of the house, and many other things must be considered and understood before the art of the drama can be understood and appreciated. This raises a serious question of literary theory. For while we were willing to follow the printer's studies in the history of typography, with real interest, and without a careful weighing of the relative merits of printing and other arts and crafts, the case would be quite different if he insisted that we cannot understand the history of literature without studying the history of printing; and we should be especially inclined to examine the merits of his contention if we found that it was accepted without question by a considerable number of literary critics. The thesis of the directors of the 'dramatic museum' is a popular one in this age; actors, playwrights, and dramatic critics alike agree with them. A Survey Of English Literature Vol 4 Of 4 written by Oliver Elton and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-16 with Literary Collections categories.

Excerpt from A Survey of English Literature, Vol. 4 of 4: 1780-1880 Overwrought, as so often, in language, but perfect in strue ture. All these deviations from rule - the new rhyme in the second quatrain, the obscuration of the break, and the final couplet - are found together in the whimsical Match with the Moon. The °house of Life recalls Shakespeare rather than Dante in its frankness, its richness, and its many obscurities. The ar rangement of the sequence in the volume of 1881 by no means represents the order of composition, but is an artistic one; and perhaps the same is true of Shakespeare's Sonnets, suppos ing that he authorised the arrangement of 1609. But in The House of Life there is no drama and for this inveterate son of Romance only two persons in the world might seem to exist. And yet the world ofxmen is not forgotten. As in Shakespeare, there is a constant outlook on the mystery of evil, the pre sentiment of death and loss, and the passing of love and life. It is high metaphysical verse rooted in personal suffering and rapture. Rossetti certainly was not attracted by philosophical systems, but still he works with far-reaching ideas. Art and beauty, song and youth and age, sin and hope, he handles, not too abstractly, but with fidelity to the conditions of poetical expression. Such themes are more conspicuous in the second section, Change and Faith.' The first, Youth and Change, ' has less of the impersonal element, and a kind of plan may be traced in it, or rather a procession of the three figures Love, Death, and Hope. Love at first triumphs, so that Hope is at first needless. Later, Hope is clouded with the fear and foretaste of Death, who at last seizes the beloved. This series, though, is interrupted by many digressions. At the end of Change and Fate the same three figures loom again, and Hope remains dubious and illusive as to the fate of Love after Death has intervened. Excerpt from Harvard Studies in English, Vol. 4: The First Duchess of Newcastle, and Her Husband as Figures, in Literary History When one does begin to discuss the Life, he finds his inter est not wholly devoted to the Duchess; it is also decidedly in trigued by the protagonist, Newcastle himself. He becomes to the reader more than a mere puppet or figurehead he proves to be a very real fiesh-and-blood man, a fine example of the Stuart aristocrat, the English Cavalier. Apart from the Life, Cavendish is interesting from a literary point of view. He too was an author; he wrote proclamations, treatises filled with political advice, books on horsemanship, and plays. He was also a patron of letters, as is shown by his literary productions; three of the five plays, in which the Duke had a share were largely written by his protégés, so that his position as a writer is in extricably entangled with his position as Maecenas. Chapter II attempts to cover both these subjects, and if some confusion results, it is because of the difficulty inherent in this web of cross-relationships. At all events Newcastle appreciated art and, though he only dabbled in it, he has a distinct position as patron and author - not to mention the fact that he furnished his wife with the material from which she built her masterpiece. The Duchess's works all have a place in literature apart from their intrinsic value, for Margaret Cavendish was one of the first Englishwomen to attain recognition as a writer. This in itself is no small claim to fame and is a sufficient reason for discussing her lesser books, which is done in Chapter III. As has been said, however, these volumes are for the most part extremely tedious, and because of this quality, coupled with their scarcity, they are little known today. Nevertheless, delv ing in them has its compensations, for it is of absorbing interest to see how one woman began written composition and how she continued it. Her works have no Sources but her own imagination, and their influence is too nebulous to compute. Still the Duchess did write at a time when women were just entering the field of literature. Her enterprise may have en couraged more talented authoresses, and if her results are not tangible, that is no cause for denying them; tradition often works more subtly than the eye of science can perceive.
