World Englishes In English Language Teaching written by Alex Baratta and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019 with English language categories.

This book provides an in-depth exploration of World Englishes and their place in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom. It opens with a critical assessment of the research to date that includes analysis of competing and complementary terms such as English as an International Language (EIL), Global English, English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) and 'Glocal English'. Here, and throughout the work, the author problematizes the terminologies used to define and describe Englishes, arguing for example for the need to distinguish between Chinglish and China English. The book then turns to an examination of three case study varieties of non-inner circle English: Konglish, Singlish and Indian English; before exploring the results of an original empirical study into language attitudes concerning several varieties of English among language teachers and learners. Finally, sample exercises for the classroom are provided. This book will be of particular interest to language teachers and teacher trainers, and to students and scholars of EFL and applied linguistics more broadly. Alex Baratta is a lecturer at the Manchester Institute of Education, the University of Manchester, UK. His research focuses on the relationship between language and identity in educational contexts, and he is also the author of Accent and Teacher Identity in Britain (2018).

The unprecedented growth and recognition of new world Englishes, call for English language teaching programs to consider the place and relevance of the paradigm of World Englishes to the content and delivery of their curricula. This concern is particularly compelling in the multi-varietal contexts such as Australia where speakers from different Kachruvian Circles interact frequently with one another. Investigating the place and pertinence of World Englishes in English language teaching in Australia this book explores the perceptions of English language teachers from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds working in Australia. Looking at the effect on teachers’ confidence when dealing with different varieties of English, the pedagogical implications and the causes of varying degrees of perception among teachers. The author highlights the possible changes that could take place that would pave the ground for the development of World Englishes-informed curriculum and pedagogy for English as an International Language, which would in turn provide opportunities for learners to develop requisite competencies for intercultural communication. These are the skills which enable learners to successfully interact with speakers of various Englishes and negotiate and navigate with their interlocutors the differing cultural conceptualisations associated with the varieties of English during international and intercultural communication. Vital reading for anyone researching English language teaching or varieties of English and those teaching English as an international language anywhere in the world.

The model of English that should be used in classrooms has long been a subject of debate. This book (with an accompanying audio CD) describes selected varieties of World Englishes, and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of selecting a particular variety from the point of view of both teachers and learners. It aims to examine and re-evaluate concepts such as 'standard', 'variety', 'native speaker' and 'non-native speaker', and to validate the role played by multilingual and multicultural English language teachers, arguing that context and learner needs should determine the variety to be taught.

The worldwide spread, diversification, and globalization of the English language in the course of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries has significant implications for English Language Teaching and teacher education. We are currently witnessing a paradigm shift towards Teaching English as an International Language (TEIL) that aims to promote multilingualism and awareness of the diversity of Englishes, increase exposure to this diversity, embrace multiculturalism, and foster cross-cultural awareness. Numerous initiatives that embrace TEIL can be observed around the world, but ELT and teacher education in Germany (and other European countries) appear to be largely unaffected by this development, with standard British and American English and the monolingual native speaker (including the corresponding cultural norms) still being very much at the center of attention. The present volume addresses this gap and is the first of its kind to showcase recent initiatives that aim at introducing TEIL into ELT and teacher education in Germany, but which have applicability and impact for other countries with comparable education systems and ‘traditional’ ELT practices in the Expanding Circle. The chapters in this book provide a balanced mix of conceptual, empirical, and practical studies and offer the perspectives of the many stakeholders involved in various settings of English language education whose voices have not often been heard, i.e., students, university lecturers, trainee teachers, teacher educators, and in-service teachers. It therefore adds significantly to the limited amount of previous work on TEIL in Germany and bridges the gap between theory and practice that will not only be relevant for researchers, educators, and practitioners in English language education in Germany but other educational settings that are still unaffected by the shift towards TEIL.

This Element offers a comprehensive account of the unprecedented spread of English as a global language by taking historical, sociolinguistic, and pedagogical perspectives. To realize this mission, it opens with an accessible discussion of the historical trajectory of the English language with qualitative and quantitative connections to its contemporary diversity in terms of forms, roles, functions, uses, users, and contexts of English as a global and multilingual franca. Built upon this synchronic-diachronic symbiosis, the discussion is complemented by an overview of major analytical paradigms and trends that promote systematical scrutiny of the English language and its sociolinguistic and educational implications. It ends by showcasing instructional practices, recommendations, reflective questions, and future directions for language educators to revamp their beliefs, commitments, and practices considering the changing needs and realities of the present-day global sociolinguistic ecology and individuals therein.
