Excerpt from Englishmen in the French Revolution The history of the French Revolution has been written with greater fulness and from a greater variety of standpoints than any other event on the globe, yet this book takes up untrodden ground. It is well known, indeed, that the Revolution attracted to Paris men from all parts of the world, and of almost all categories - enthusiasts, adventurers, sensation-hunters; some of the best specimens of humanity and some of the worst; some of the most generous minds and some of the most selfish; some of the busiest brains and some of the idlest. Not a few of these moths perished in the flame which they had imprudently approached; others escaped with a singeing of their wings; others, again, were fortunate enough to pass unscathed. Some died in their beds just before the Terror ended, but without any assurance of its ending; others only just saw the end. The foreigners, like the natives, who fairly survived the Revolution, had very various fortunes. Some were thoroughly disillusioned, became vehement reactionaries, or abjured politics and were transformed into sober or enterprising men of business. John Goldworth Alger (1836-1907) was an English journalist and author. Born at Diss, Norfolk, and baptised on 7 August 1836, he was the only son of John Alger, a corn merchant there, by his wife Jemima, daughter of Salem Goldworth of Morning Thorpe, Norfolk. Educated at Diss, Alger became a journalist at the age of 16. At first he wrote for the Norfolk News, and afterwards transferred his services to the Oxford Journal. In 1866 Alger joined the parliamentary reporting staff of The Times, and after eight years of that job was sent to Paris in 1874 to act as assistant to Henri Opper de Blowitz, the Times correspondent there. He stayed for 28 years. In 1902 Alger retired from The Times on a pension, and settled in London. He died unmarried at 7 Holland Park Court, Addison Road, West Kensington, on 23 May 1907

Britain And The French Revolution written by Clive Emsley and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-10-13 with History categories.

The French Revolution catapulted Europe into a new period of political upheaval, social change, and into the modern era. This book provides a concise introduction to the impact of the French Revolution on Britain and to the ways in which this impact has been assessed by historians. The book is organised thematically. It begins with a survey of the ideological debate sparked off by the Revolution discussing, in particular, the work of people such as Burke, Paine, Spence and Wollstonecraft. From here it presents an exploration of the Revolution s impact on * Parliamentary polities * The growth of radicalism and loyalism * The way in which French ideas influenced Irish aspirations to generate rebellion The third main section of the book focuses on the causes and course of Britain s war with Revolutionary France, and on the effects of the war on the home front, most notably the recurrent, serious food shortages.
