It is well known, indeed, that the Revolution attracted to Paris men from all parts of the world, and of almost all categories - enthusiasts, adventurers, sensation-hunters; some of the best specimens of humanity and some of the worst; some of the most generous minds and some of the most selfish; some of the busiest brains and some of the idlest. Not a few of these moths perished in the flame which they had imprudently approached; others escaped with a singeing of their wings; others, again, were fortunate enough to pass unscathed. Some died in their beds just before the Terror ended, but without any assurance of its ending; others only just saw the end. The foreigners, like the natives, who fairly survived the Revolution, had very various fortunes. Some were thoroughly disillusioned, became vehement reactionaries, or abjured politics and were transformed into sober or enterprising men of business. Excerpt from The Story of the French Revolution The following Sketch of the course of the French Revolution was originally published during 1889 in serial form in Justice, the weekly organ of the Social Demo' cratic Federation. It has been revised, corrected, and, in some parts, added to, for the present re-issue. It need scarcely be said that it in no way pretends to be a com plete history of the great political, social, and intellectual movement it describes. The present volume is designed primarily as a guide to those who, not having the time to study larger works on the subject, yet wish during these centennial years to have in a small compass a con nected description of the main events of the French Revolution, more especially from the point Of View of modern Socialism. It is undeniable that there are many Englishmen who would indignantly repudiate any'asper sions on their education for whom the French Revolution means little more than the destruction of one institution called the Bastille, the erection of another institution called theguillotine, and the establishment of the Napo leonic Empire on the ruins of both. They have no idea Of the complex forces, economical, speculative, and po litical, which manifested themselves in the succession of crises (scarcely, indeed, of the existence of the crises themselves) which took place between the assembling of the states-general in 1789, _and the suppression of the Babmuf conspiracy in 1796. Excerpt from Lectures on the French Revolution The revenue of France was near twenty millions when Lewis XVI., finding it inadequate, called upon the nation for supply. In a Single lifetime it rose to far more than one hundred millions, while the national income grew still more rapidly; and this increase was wrought by a class to whom the ancient monarchy denied its best rewards, and whom it deprived of power in the country they enriched. As their industry effected change in the distribution of property, and wealth ceased to be the prerogative of a few, the excluded majority perceived that their disabilities rested on no foundation of right and justice, and were unsupported by reasons Of State. They proposed that the prizes in the Government, the Army, and the Church should be given to merit among the active and necessary portion of the people, and that no privilege injurious to them should be reserved for the unprofitable minority. Being nearly an hundred to one, they deemed that they were virtually the substance of the nation, and they claimed to govern themselves with a power proportioned to their numbers.
