An extension to existing design tools that utilize tow-steering is presented which is used to investigate the use of elastic tailoring for a flat panel with a central hole under combined loads of compression and shear. The elastic tailoring is characterized by tow-steering within individual lamina as well as a novel approach based on selective reinforcement, which attempts to minimize compliance through the use of Cellular Automata design concepts. The selective reinforcement designs lack any consideration of manufacturing constraints, so a new tow-steered path definition was developed to translate the prototype selective reinforcement designs into manufacturable plies. The minimum weight design of a flat panel under combined loading was based on a model provided by NASA-Langley personnel and analyzed by STAGS within the OLGA design environment. Baseline designs using traditional straight fiber plies were generated, as well as tow-steered designs which incorporated parallel, tow-drop, and overlap plies within the laminate. These results indicated that the overlap method provided the best improvement with regards to weight and performance as compared to traditional constant stiffness monocoque panels, though the laminates did not measure up to similar designs from the literature using sandwich and isogrid constructions. Further design studies were conducted using various numbers of the selective reinforcement plies at the core and outer surface of the laminate. None of these configurations exhibited notable advantages with regard to weight or buckling performance. This was due to the fact that the minimization of the compliance tended to direct the major stresses toward the center of the panel, which decreased the ability of the structure to withstand loads leading to instability.

Articulated heavy duty vehicles are widely used around the world for its economic and environmental benefits. A-train double is one of the most popular heavy duty vehicles in Canada. Despite its advantages, the spread of A-train is hampered by poor lateral dynamic performance and poor accident avoid ability in highway resulted from its special structure. In order to evaluate the lateral dynamic performance of the A-train double at highway speed, ISO standards have proposed the rearward amplification (RA) measures to characterizing the performance. It has been reported that the RA curves obtained through three different methods proposed by ISO-14791 differ. This thesis studies three proposed methods in detail and analyzes the contributing causes for the inconsistency among three test maneuvers based on A-train double. In order to increase the lateral stability of the A-train double, Active steering systems (ATS) have been designed through two methods: robust LQR-LMI method with genetic algorithm (GA) optimization and H∞ method. The designed controllers are validated by numerical simulation and hardware in-loop simulation. The ATS designed from two methods show good robust stability and improve the lateral dynamic performance of A-train double dramatically at highway speed.

An efficient methodology for design of aircraft composite wing structures is presented. The developed approach provides a flexible and integrated strategy to leverage advantages of composite material tow steering to achieve more effective wing designs. This is accomplished by including the coupling between OML geometry, aerodynamics and structural response. Structural and aerodynamic analyses are derived from parametric aircraft geometry and assembled into a framework for aero-structural wing sizing. A Ritz equivalent plate solution is extended to model composite materials with variable fiber path geometry. The structural modeling approach is implemented to automate creation of both Ritz and finite element analyses. The Ritz structural model is coupled to a vortex lattice flow solver and implemented into an optimization framework. By using this approach we are more rapidly able to gain an understanding of optimal wing skin laminates that satisfy a variety of constrains and objective functions. The framework is suitable for conceptual and preliminary design of aircraft wing skins and it has been applied to accomplish a tow-steered wing skin design.

Various advantages offered by Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) have led to its increasing application in the aerospace industry to manufacture high-quality, large structural parts. Application of this technology, however, is considerably restrained by the defects that appear in the layup particularly during tow steering. An extensive experimental investigation using various process parameters and steering radii is performed to gain a deeper understanding of defect formation processes during steering of thermosetting prepreg tows. Five predominant defect types, namely in-plane fiber waviness, sheared fibers, tow pull up (bridging), blisters and out-of-plane wrinkles that occur during the steering are identified. The defects formation mechanisms are explained and discussed. Furthermore, a more detailed set of experiments is performed to capture the viscoelastic growth of individual wrinkles with time. A novel finite element modeling framework for simulating the prepreg deposition process is presented in the commercial finite element software, Abaqus. It is demonstrated that by prescribing the global behavior of prepreg tow during the process and representing prepreg tack with an appropriate cohesive zone model, this approach is capable of capturing wrinkles and blisters that are caused by tow steering. Moreover, the conventional local approaches for modeling defects are extended by utilizing a viscoelastic interface to develop a theoretical model which is capable of demonstrating the time-dependent growth of wrinkles. The interaction between prepreg and compaction roller is known to be influential on the quality of the deposited tow. Five compaction rollers with different materials, stiffness, and architecture are built. In a series of experiments the effect of each roller on the appearance of defects, particularly on blisters is investigated. The optimum roller design based on the experimental observations was identified.
