Excerpt from Enigmas of Life Nine years have now elapsed since the author of the Enigmas of Life ceased to be among us, and eighteen years since he published this book and in republishing it, a few words about him and the work that he did may therefore have become necessary. That it should now be offered to the public in a more accessible form than the one in which it originally appeared, is due to the steady interest it continues to excite in the circle which it has already reached, and the desire of those who have at heart the recognition of its merits that that circle should be more widely extended. The Enigmas of Life was one of Mr Greg's latest works, but it contains the scattered thoughts of a lifetime, which he brought together from the jottings of his note-book when he had reason to believe that they might have value and interest for others. He did not put them forth with any pretensions to a systematic scheme of thought, or a serious contribution to established conclusions, but, as he himself says, rather as suggested thoughts that may fructify in other minds than distinct propositions which it is sought argumentatively to prove. They have charmed and stimulated other minds to a degree which he did not anticipate. As an eminent writer says: The chapters on Malthus and on the non-survival of the Fittest make a very genuine and original contribution to modern thought. But it is the later essays in the little volume that touched most readers, and will for long continue to touch them. They are as far as possible from being vague, or misty, or aimless. Yet they have, what is so curiously rare in English literature, the charm of reverie. They have the ever seductive note of meditation and inwardness, which, when it sounds true, as it assuredly did here, moves the spirit like a divine music. There is none of the thunder of Carlyle (which, for that matter, one may easily come in time to find prodigiously useless and unedifying), there is not the piercing concentrated ring of Emerson: but the complaints, the misgivings, the aspirations of our generation find in certain pages of Mr Greg's book a voice of mingled fervour and a union of contemplative reason with spiritual sensibility, which makes them one of the best expressions of one of the highest moods of this bewildered age. They are in the true key for religious or spiritual composition, as Rousseau's Savoyard Vicar is; thought and emotion are fused without the decorations of misplaced rhetoric. That meditations so stamped with sincerity, and so honestly directed to the actual perplexities of thoughtful people, should have met with wide and grateful acceptance, is no more than might have been expected. Excerpt from Enigmas of the Spiritual Life The title of my book will suffice to indicate that this work is not a collection of hortatory or directly practical sermons, but an attempt to think out some of the gravest and most interesting problems of man's higher life, as they present themselves to inquirers in the present age. Excerpt from The Riddle of Life: A Novel If some of the young ladies on the promenade deck gave Stephen Derwent a glance more kindly than critical, no one could really blame them. He was tali, close upon six feet; his features were not only regular, but gave evidence of strength; there was a positive set about his shoulders which meant more than mere physical vitality; and that clean shaven face of his indicated both energy and will. At a casual glance he looked full thirty years of age; but when one came closer to him, his youth fulness became more apparent, and it would be seen then that he was not more than twenty-four or five at the most. Excerpt from Miltonic Enigmas The gross misconception of incidents, characters and names in the Masque grows out of the endeavor to under stand the matter literally. The Masque is an allegory designed to convey a wholesome warning to the English church and people. 'without adducing the outstanding facts of the situation which will occur to students of Eng lish history, as threatening the purity of society and pri vate life we desire to say at once that the play is directed against the doctrine and practice of Free-love and all that it implies. Comus the magician impersonates the corrupt influence; the Spirit is the Genius of the Seventh Commandment, or Chastity; the Lady is the Christian Church of England; her two Brothers and defenders are Reason and Conscience. The significance of the other names will appear in due order. The Spirit has his mansion before the starry thresh old of Jove's court. Heaven is ruled by Love, not by the Decalogue, but the Virtues which the place demands from those who enter are gate-keepers and exclude the vicious. Especially is this true of Chastity (matt. XXII. Excerpt from The Problem of Life: A Solution In undertaking this elucidation of the problem of life, I would have it clearly understood that while I am not to be regarded as a Christian, yet I am essentially a man of very earnest religious convictions. There is perhaps a natural tendency in a Christian country for people to confuse and confound the terms "religious" and "Christian," but the words are not synonymous. Furthermore, let me say that my outlook on life is essentially optimistic. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. We Moderns written by Edwin Muir and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-14 with Self-Help categories.

Excerpt from We Moderns: Enigmas and Guesses Nietzsche and even worse heretics, to the spacious, innocent, somewhat gaudy days Of the Greek illumination for such a fellow, so bred and circumscribed, to come out Of his tower with a concept Of life as a grand and glittering adven ture, a tremendous spectacle, an overpowering ecstasy, almost an orgy - such a phenomenon was, and is, quite sufficient to lift the judicious eyebrow. Yet here is this Mr. Edwin Muir Of Caledonia bearing just that outlandish contra band, Oifering just that strange flouting Of all things traditionally Scotch. What he preaches in the ensuing aphorisms is the emancipation of the modern spirit from its rotting heritage of ingenuous fears and exploded certainties. What he denounces most bitterly is the abandonment Of a world that is beautifully surprising and charming to the rule of sordid, timid and nu i'maginative men - the regimentation Of ideas in a system that is half a denial of the Obvious and half a conglomeration of outworn metaphors, all taken too literally. And what he pleads for most eloquently, with his cold, reserved northern eloquence, is the whole-hearted acceptance Of life as a sacrament, life as joy triumph ing over fate, life made innocent. Excerpt from The Riddle of Life: And How Theosophy Answers It This unity of teachings among the world-religions is due to the fact that they are all founded by members of the Brotherhood of divine Teachers, the custodian of the Divine Wisdom, of Theosophy. From this Brotherhood come out, from time to time, the Founders of new religions, who ever bring with them the same teachings, but shape the form of those teachings to suit the conditions of the time, such as the intellectual stage of the people to who-m They come, their type, their needs, their capacities. The essentials are ever the same; the non-essentials vary. This identity is shown in the symbols which appear in all faiths, for symbols form the common language of religions. The circle, the triangle, the cross the eye, the sun, the star, with many another, ever bear their silent testimony to the fundamental unity of the religions of the world. Understanding this, the Theosophical Society serves every religion within its own domain, and draws them together into a Brotherhood. In morals, Theosophy builds its teachings on the Unity, seeing in each form the expression of a common Life, and therefore the fact that what injures one injures all. To do evil 0 e., to throw poison into the life-blood of humanity, is a crime against the Unity. Theosophy has no code of morals, being itself the embodiment of the highest morality' it presents to its students the highest moral teachings Of all religions, gathering the most fragrant blossoms from the gardens of the world-faiths. Its Society has no code, for any code that could be generally imposed would be at the average low level of the day, and the Society seeks to raise its members above the ordinary level by ever presenting to them the highest ideals, and infusing into them the loftiest aspirations. It leaves aside the law of Moses to walk in the spirit of the Buddha, of the Christ. It seeks to evolve the inner law, not to impose an outer. Its method with its least evolved members is not expulsion, but reformation. The embodiment of the Divine Wisdom in an organisation gives a nucleus from which its life-forces may radiate. A new and strong link is thus made between the spiritual and the material worlds; it is in very truth a Sacrament the outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace, a witness of the Life of God in Man.
