Since the 1970s, critical realism has grown to address a range of subjects, including economics, philosophy, science, and religion. It has become a complex and mature philosophy. Enlightened Common Sense: The Philosophy of Critical Realism looks back over this development in one concise and accessible volume. The late Roy Bhaskar was critical realism’s philosophical originator and chief exponent. He draws on a lifetime’s experience to give a definitive, systematic account of this increasingly influential, international and multidisciplinary approach. Critical realism’s key element has always been its vindication and deepening of our understanding of ontology. Arguing that realist ontology is inexorable in knowledge and action, Bhaskar sees this as the key to a new enlightened common sense. From the definition of critical realism and its applicability in the social sciences, to explanation of dialectical critical realism and the philosophy of metaReality, this is the essential introduction for students of critical realism.

Common Sense As A Paradigm Of Thought written by Tim Delaney and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-12-07 with Psychology categories.

The notion of common sense and abiding by its implications is something that, seemingly, everyone agrees is a good way of making behavioral decisions and conducting one's daily activities. This holds true whether one is a liberal, moderate, or conservative; young or old; and regardless of one's race and ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation. If utilizing common sense is such a good idea, why then, do so many people seem to violate it? This is just one of many significant questions surrounding the idea of common sense explored and discussed in this book. This volume presents common sense as a ‘paradigm of thought’ and as such, compares it to other major categories of thought — tradition, faith, enlightened and rational. Combining a balance of practical, everyday approaches (through the use of popular culture references and featured boxes) and academic analysis of core and conceptual methodological issues, Delaney demonstrates: The limitations of common sense and its place in everyday social interactions How we learn about common sense Why common sense is so important Common Sense as a Paradigm of Thought introduces readers to a rich variety of sociological authors and will appeal to students and researchers interested in fields such as: sociology, philosophy, social psychology, cultural studies, communications and health studies.

The Appeal To The Given written by Jacob Joshua Ross and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-05 with Philosophy categories.

Originally published in 1970. This work evaluates the appeal to the sensually given which played an important role in epistemological discussions during the early 20th Century. While many contemporary philosophers regarded this appeal as a mistake, there were still some who defended the notion of the given and even made it the foundation of their views regarding perception. The author here points to several different views concerning the nature of the sensually given and argues that the issue between them is not empirical, as is naturally suggested by what he calls ‘the Naïve View’ of the dispute, but rather metaphysical, involving different theories regarding the relationship between Thought and Reality. This leads on to a discussion of the different views presently held regarding the task of the epistemologist, and to a new suggestion with regard to the relationship between common sense and the rival ontologies suggested by scientists and philosophers. In the course of the argument a variety of different topics are discussed such as the correspondence and coherence theories of truth, the differences between scientific and philosophical theories, and the relevance of scientific treatments of the subject of perception to the treatment of this topic by philosophers.

Boaventura And Education written by Inês Barbosa de Oliveira and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-06-09 with Education categories.

This book examines the work of the leading critical and decolonial intellectual Boaventura de Sousa Santos and its impact on education in general, and curriculum in particular. The volume brings to the table crucial itinerant theoretical rivers of thought in order to examine and understand the crises of modernity and their consequences. The author insightfully articulates Sousa Santos’ major arguments – ‘prudent knowledge’, ‘decent life’, ‘sociology of absences’, and ‘epistemicide’, among others – to unpack some of the major issues facing the contemporary critical terrain. In so doing, she examines how Sousa Santos retools the critical ‘emancipatory educational project’ towards a more just and participatory democratic society. “Boaventura de Sousa Santos’ groundbreaking theories on epistemology, politics, and society are weaved into brilliant focus against the backdrop of educational practice. What emerges is a powerful exposé of political tensions, contestations, and ruptures, inherent to the struggle against the persistent colonizing forces in the lives of oppressed populations. Central to this decolonizing treatise are the paradigmatic transformations essential to an education truly in the service of democratic life.” – Antonia Darder, Leavey Endowed Chair of Ethics & Moral Leadership, Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, Distinguished Visiting Professor of Education, University of Johannesburg, South Africa “A must read for educators and for students. Boaventura and Education allows one to understand the importance of the work of Boaventura de Sousa Santos that is essential for those who struggle for another world; that is more just, democratic, and united.” – Jurjo Torres Santomé, Professor, Universidade de A Coruña, Spain “In her work of art, precision, and clarity on the work of Boaventura, Inês Barbosa de Oliveira offers us a new framework with which to analyze and critically understand education. ... Oliveira’s Boaventura and Education is a fundamental tool for thinking critically for all those who oppose the mental paralysis that harasses us.” – José Félix Angulo Rasco, Professor of Education, University of Cadiz, Spain, Professor of Education, Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, Chile
