What Is Madness written by Darian Leader and has been published by Penguin UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-10-06 with Psychology categories.

What is Madness? is Darian Leader's probing study of madness, sanity, and everything in between What separates the sane from the mad? How hard or easy is it to tell them apart? And what if the difference is really between being mad and going mad? In this landmark work Darian Leader undermines common conceptions of madness. Through case studies like the apparently 'normal' Harold Shipman, he shows that madness rarely conforms to standard models. What is Madness? explores the idea of quiet madness - that at times many of us live interior lives that are far from sane but allow us to function normally and unthreateningly - he argues that we must seek a new way to assess, treat and deal with those suffering mental health problems. What is Madness? is Darian Leader's radically insightful and masterfully convincing exploration of a painful, complex but endlessly fascinating area of humanity. 'A terrific intellectual stylist' Joseph O' Neill, Guardian 'Engrossing and enlightening . . . Leader is as much a philosopher as a psychoanalyst' Metro 'The mad . . . have been segregated and often confined; for fear, perhaps, that they will contaminate the rest of us. But as Darian Leader brilliantly shows, things are never so simple' Hanif Kureshi, Independent 'Provides valuable insights into how psychiatry can help those who have suffered psychosis to rebuild their lives' Sunday Times 'Witty, probing. A myth-busting diagnosis of the method in our madness' Independent 'Leader's insights could have radical consequences for the way we regard madness' Daily Telegraph 'Fascinating. A formidable grasp of psychiatric history and a storyteller's flair for detail. What Leader does so effectively is to give us a sense of what it might be like to live inside the mind of a psychotic. A humane and timely book' New Statesman 'Superb insights, brilliant' Observer 'One of our most important contemporary thinkers' Guardian Darian Leader is a psychoanalyst practising in London and a member of the Centre for Freudian Analysis and Research and of the College of Psychoanalysts - UK. He is the author of The New Black, Strictly Bipolar, Why do women write more letters than they post?, Promises lovers make when it gets late, Freud's Footnotes and Stealing the Mona Lisa, and co-author, with David Corfield, of Why Do People Get Ill? He is Honorary Visiting Professor in the School of Human and Life Sciences, Roehampton University.

Fear Of Fifty written by Erica Jong and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-09-07 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Seducing the Demon has introduced Erica Jong to readers who hadn't been born when Fear of Flying was published in 1973. Now one of her finest works of nonfiction -and a New York Times bestseller-is back in print with a new afterword. In Fear of Fifty, a New York Times bestseller when first published in 1994, Erica Jong looks to the second half of her life and "goes right to the jugular of the women who lived wildly and vicariously through Fear of Flying" (Publishers Weekly), delivering highly entertaining stories and provocative insights on sex, marriage, aging, feminism, and motherhood. "What Jong calls a midlife memoir is a slice of autobiography that ranks in honesty, self-perception and wisdom with [works by] Simone de Beauvoir and Mary McCarthy," wrote the Sunday Times (U.K.). "Although Jong's memoir of a Jewish American princess is wittier than either."

Belleza Y Felicidad written by Fernanda Laguna and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with Argentine poetry categories.

Poetry. Fiction. Art. Latino/Latina Studies. Translated from the Spanish by Stuart Krimko. As the Argentine economy went into freefall at the end of the last millennium, two young women--Fernanda Laguna and Cecilia Pavón--met and became friends. Fernanda, a painter and poet who also publishes fiction under the nom de plume Dalia Rosetti, and Cecilia, a poet and translator, soon forged the radically creative partnership now known as Belleza y Felicidad. As Belleza emerged into a movement and inspired a community, Fernanda and Cecilia broadcast its ethos--a complete program of resistance, as César Aira once described it--through a prodigious output of poetry and fiction. Now a generous selection of this work is available in English for the first time. With an introduction by translator Stuart Krimko, this authoritative volume transmits the urgency and passionate feeling at the heart of one of the most exciting artistic and literary movements to emerge from South America in recent decades. BELLEZA Y FELICIDAD, both the place and the idea, live on in the irresistible pleasures of Cecilia's and Fernanda's poems and stories. Upon revisiting them now I find that they are in fact high-precision lenses for seeing the daily utopias of reality.--César Aira Fernanda Laguna and Cecilia Pavón are legendary writers, domesticating the world in order to make it the subject of their 'domestic' poetry. They are voracious and understand everything. Stuart Krimko's translations capture the totalizing effect of their writings beautifully.--Chris Kraus This book is a paradise of love. Eminent, charismatic, & frolicsome, it's also the magic transcription of a friendship, i.e. a romance (several!), the kind I spent my misspent youth envying in Montaigne & La Boetie. Ecstatics of childlike candor & polymorphous grace, Fernanda Laguna & Cecilia Pavón are absolute women, guileless dreamers, saints in sneakers, on sidewalks, in jail, in Zara, on buses, in nightclubs, in bed, about to turn 29, & 37, & 7. I can't wait for everyone in america to read this book & never be the same again.--Ariana Reines

Stanley Kubrick written by Gene D. Phillips and has been published by University Press of Mississippi this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-07-08 with Performing Arts categories.

From his first feature film, Fear and Desire (1953), to his final, posthumously released Eyes Wide Shut (1999), Stanley Kubrick excelled at probing the dark corners of human consciousness. In doing so, he adapted such popular novels as The Killing, Lolita, A Clockwork Orange, and The Shining and selected a wide variety of genres for his films -- black comedy (Dr. Strangelove), science fiction (2001: A Space Odyssey), and war (Paths of Glory and Full Metal Jacket). Because he was peerless in unveiling the intimate mysteries of human nature, no new film by Kubrick ever failed to spark debate or to be deeply pondered. Kubrick (1928-1999) has remained as elusive as the subjects of his films. Unlike many other filmmakers he was not inclined to grant interviews, instead preferring to let his movies speak for themselves. By allowing both critics and moviegoers to see the inner workings of this reclusive filmmaker, this first comprehensive collection of his relatively few interviews is invaluable. Ranging from 1959 to 1987 and including Kubrick's conversations with Gene Siskel, Jeremy Bernstein, Gene D. Phillips, and others, this book reveals Kubrick's diverse interests -- nuclear energy and its consequences, space exploration, science fiction, literature, religion, psychoanalysis, the effects of violence, and even chess -- and discloses how each affects his films. He enthusiastically speaks of how advances in camera and sound technology made his films more effective. Kubrick details his hands-on approach to filmmaking as he discusses why he supervises nearly every aspect of production. "All the hand-held camerawork is mine," he says in a 1972 interview about A Clockwork Orange. "In addition to the fun of doing the shooting myself, I find it virtually impossible to explain what I want in a hand-held shot to even the most talented and sensitive camera operator. " Neither guarded nor evasive, the Kubrick who emerges from these interviews is candid, opinionated, confident, and articulate. His incredible memory and his gift for organization come to light as he quotes verbatim sections of reviews, books, and articles. Despite his reputation as a recluse, the Kubrick of these interviews is approachable, witty, full of anecdotes, and eager to share a fascinating story. Gene D. Phillips, S.J., is a professor of English at Loyola University in Chicago, where he teaches fiction and the history of film. He is the author of many notable books on film and is a founding member of the editorial board of both Literature/Film Quarterly and The Tennessee Williams Journal. He was acquainted with Stanley Kubrick for twenty-five years.

The former good girl who became the star of Deep Throat tells the horrifying true story of her life on and off camera in this shocking tell-all memoir. Linda Boreman was just twenty-one when she met Chuck Traynor, the man who would change her life. Less than two years later, the girl who wouldn’t let her high school dates get past first base was catapulted to fame as an adult film superstar. Linda Boreman of Yonkers, New York, had become Linda Lovelace. The unprecedented success of Deep Throat made pornography popular with mainstream audiences and made Lovelace a household name. But nobody, from the A-list celebrities who touted the movie to the audiences that lined up to see it, knew the truth about what went on behind the scenes. Taken prisoner by her sado-masochistic manager, Linda was forced into a marriage of savage beatings, hypnotism, and rape. She was terrorized into prostitution at gunpoint and forced to perform unspeakable perversions on film. Years later, when Linda came out of hiding to tell her story, the revelations rocked the porn industry in ways that made her fear for her life.
