Como é possível que coisas ruins aconteçam em um mundo criado por um Deus bom? Se Ele é poderoso, como permite que aconteçam tais coisas? Pode-se observar na sociedade atual, que há uma grande diferença entre saber o que é o mal e fazer o mal. Apesar da máxima presente na vida de cada ser humano de que “o bem deve ser feito e o mal evitado”, na prática isto está longe de acontecer, pois fazer ou não o bem e fazer ou não o mal é algo que, segundo Agostinho, é inerente ao homem, uma vez que sua natureza é limitada. Na década de 50, Pio XII já dizia que a sociedade havia perdido a noção de pecado e a civilização, mais de 50 anos depois, continua na mesma situação: roubos, assassinatos, corrupção, etc. Não se pode negar que o mal existe e faz parte da natureza humana de forma a corrompê-la, pois a natureza é boa em si, mas o vício a corrompe. Para o modelo de mundo que a humanidade criou e recria todos os dias o mal parece ser como que o tempero, o condimento para que possa haver vitalidade. Na maioria das grandes movimentações humanas o que as está impulsionando ou é a perpetração de uma maldade ou é uma reação a ela, que resultará seguramente em uma outra grande má ação – a réplica que exigirá uma tréplica. E essa dialética do mal possui um histórico tão longo quanto a própria humanidade. Sob o aspecto metafísico-ontológico, o mal simplesmente não existe no Cosmos. O que existe são graus inferiores de ser em relação a Deus, graus que dependem da finitude do ser criado e dos diferentes níveis dessa finitude. No entanto, a limitação dos seres criados parece questionar a bondade e magnificência de Deus, resultando no intrincado problema: Non sit Deus auctor mali?
