Not easily translated, the Spanish terms cursi and cursilería refer to a cultural phenomenon widely prevalent in Spanish society since the nineteenth century. Like "kitsch," cursi evokes the idea of bad taste, but it also suggests one who has pretensions of refinement and elegance without possessing them. In The Culture of Cursilería, Noël Valis examines the social meanings of cursi, viewing it as a window into modern Spanish history and particularly into the development of middle-class culture. Valis finds evidence in literature, cultural objects, and popular customs to argue that cursilería has its roots in a sense of cultural inadequacy felt by the lower middle classes in nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century Spain. The Spain of this era, popularly viewed as the European power most resistant to economic and social modernization, is characterized by Valis as suffering from nostalgia for a bygone, romanticized society that structured itself on strict class delineations. With the development of an economic middle class during the latter half of the nineteenth century, these designations began to break down, and individuals across all levels of the middle class exaggerated their own social status in an attempt to protect their cultural capital. While the resulting manifestations of cursilería were often provincial, indeed backward, the concept was—and still is—closely associated with a sense of home. Ultimately, Valis shows how cursilería embodied the disparity between old ways and new, and how in its awkward manners, airs of pretension, and graceless anxieties it represents Spain's uneasy surrender to the forces of modernity. The Culture of Cursilería will interest students and scholars of Latin America, cultural studies, Spanish literature, and modernity.

Lo falso y lo original conviven en desigual pero en continua relación desde los orígenes de nuestra cultura. En cierto modo, mantienen una relación de dependencia parecida a la del otro con el yo, o similar a encontrarse ante un juego de espejos. Durante muchos años, hacia lo considerado literatura falsa, se ha tenido una mirada negativa que la asimilaba al delito, de modo que términos como plagio, falsificación, fraude y otros tienen principalmente acepción legal, y desde esta perspectiva se han hecho bastantes acercamientos a una realidad compleja cuyo territorio resulta difícil delimitar y nombrar. Pero esta acepción criminal –que la rela- ciona con otros fraudes, como los de la industria alimentaria, la moda, etc.– es fácil de comprender, no solo por lo que las falsificaciones literarias suponen de engaño al lector / consumidor, sino también por las implicaciones que en otros tiempos tuvieron, al servir para legitimar derechos sobre tierras, propiedades y cobros de impuestos que, en puridad, no tenía quien mandaba falsificar o contrahacer documentos y testimo- nios. Las genealogías, las historias de las ciudades, las de las iglesias locales, abundan en este tipo de falsa literatura, dirigida a asegurar un orden político, económico y de poder.

Es así que los libros fungen como vehículos de difusión en el proceso de secularización, a la vez que indican la pérdida del monopolio de la religión en la cultura y en la construcción del conocimiento y en la formación de subjetividades secularizadas. En esta obra, Melchor Campos García hace un recorrido de la historia del libro en su llegada a puertos yucatecos, la oferta y demanda de títulos en el mercado de Mérida y Campeche a partir de la publicidad de los anunciantes particulares, casas mercantiles y oficinas de imprentas. Además, evalúa el acceso a la lectura en bibliotecas públicas y la posesión de libros de autores españoles y extranjeros entre las clases políticas, elites culturales y grupos dominantes de Mérida y Campeche, destacando la biblioteca del malogrado juez Pedro Elizalde y Escudero. De esta forma el autor logra caracterizar el proceso de secularización que acompaña a las lecturas en tierras yucatecas.
