Excerpt from Impresos de Alcalá en la Biblioteca del Escorial: Con Adiciones y Correcciones Á la Obra "Ensayo de una Tipografía Complutense," Seguidas de un Nuevo Indice Alfabético de los Impresos Alcalaínos é Ilustradas Con Dos Fototipias y un Fotograbado El Ensayo de una sografz'a Complutense pertenece al grupo de las monografías consagradas á la descripción de libros impresos en una localidad determinada, y su mérito principal, como el de casi todas las obras congéneres, no estriba precisamente en las noticias históricas acerca de la imprenta alcalaina, que son muy escasas y un simple corolario de la obra, sino en el abundante número de artícu los con que en ella se contribuye á la bibliografía general española. Para la historia tipográfica de Alcalá propiamente dicha, creo que se requería otro plan o método y algunos datos más de los que se consignan en las portadas y colofones de los libros y que son los que el autor del Ensayo resume en la introducción y en un apéndice final acerca de los impresores, y sobraban en cambio las descripciones mi nuciosas, la copia exacta de portadas y las diversas noticias literarias que constituyen el meollo dela obra. Los artículos de que ésta se compone, van distribuidos por riguroso orden cronológico para mejor poder apreciar el movimiento, tipográfico é intelectual de aquel antiguo centro universitario; las descripciones están tomadas directamente de los libros, siempre que el autor ha podido encon trarlos, y se ajustan por punto general al tipo de las monografías de talladas y minuciosas, sistema ya generalizado y reconocido como el más perfecto y que es lástima no se haya adoptado igualmente en todos los trabajos que constituyen hoy la base principal de la tu tura Biblioteca española, cuya composición habría quedado de ese modo reducida 6 poco menos á un simple trabajo de acarreo, mien tras que la falta de exactitud y de uniformidad en algunas de ellas ha de originar serias dificultades y exigirá nuevos y no pequeños esfuerzos. Jesuits established a large number of astronomical, geophysical and meteorological observatories during the 17th and 18th centuries and again during the 19th and 20th centuries throughout the world. The history of these observatories has never been published in a complete form. Many early European astronomical observatories were established in Jesuit colleges. During the 17th and 18th centuries Jesuits were the first western scientists to enter into contact with China and India. It was through them that western astronomy was first introduced in these countries. They made early astronomical observations in India and China and they directed for 150 years the Imperial Observatory of Beijing. In the 19th and 20th centuries a new set of observatories were established. Besides astronomy these now included meteorology and geophysics. Jesuits established some of the earliest observatories in Africa, South America and the Far East. Jesuit observatories constitute an often forgotten chapter of the history of these sciences.

Knowledge of the pragmatici sheds new light on pragmatic normative literature (mainly from the religious sphere), a genre crucial for the formation of normative orders in early modern Ibero-America. Long underrated by legal historical scholarship, these media – manuals for confessors, catechisms, and moral theological literature – selected and localised normative knowledge for the colonial worlds and thus shaped the language of normativity. The eleven chapters of this book explore the circulation and the uses of pragmatic normative texts in the Iberian peninsula, in New Spain, Peru, New Granada and Brazil. The book reveals the functions and intellectual achievements of pragmatic literature, which condensed normative knowledge, drawing on medieval scholarly practices of ‘epitomisation’, and links the genre with early modern legal culture.
