Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) fue un hombre de una curiosidad intelectual casi ilimitada. Estudió matemáticas, física y ciencias humanas en Cambridge. Su teoría de los tipos, con la que daba respuesta a la grave crisis que atravesaba la teoría de los conjuntos, abrió un nuevo campo a la lógica formal. En la filosofía moral y social, abordó las contradicciones entre individuo y sociedad, libertad y orden, progresismo y pesimismo, etcétera. Su insobornable actividad crítica hizo que fuera encarcelado en dos ocasiones. Enfrentado a la carrera armamentística nuclear y la violencia en general, presidió el tribunal que juzgó los crímenes de guerra en Vietnam. Fue profesor en Cambridge y conferenciante en universidades y centros culturales de todo el mundo, y en 1950 fue galardonado con el Premio Nobel de Literatura. Destacan en su vasta obra Principia mathematica, La educación y el orden social, Elogio de la ociosidad, Fundamentos de filosofía, Ensayos impopulares, Pesadillas de personas eminentes y Misticismo y lógica entre otras. En 1989 Edhasa publicó Lo mejor de Bertrand Russell y en 1991 su extensa Autobiografía.
