Ensinando pensamento crítico chega ao Brasil em uma parceria da Elefante com a ONG Ação Educativa, em uma época de retrocessos em todas as áreas, e não apenas no país; mas também em um momento em que setores da sociedade — notadamente, o movimento negro — reagem com força ao absurdo da violência cotidiana em todos os níveis de existência que, apesar dos discursos sobre igualdade, não deixa as pessoas negras respirarem. O livro trata de inúmeros temas, como descolonização, engajamento, integridade, colaboração, transmissão oral de conhecimento, imaginação, humor, conflito, espiritualidade, sexo e, é claro, raça, gênero e classe — temas que marcam a obra de bell hooks de maneira transversal. A autora diz que encontrou inspiração para Ensinando pensamento crítico das lições que aprendeu dos professores com os quais estudou nas escolas segregadas do Kentucky, nos Estados Unidos, nos anos 1950. "Para eles, a 'boa educação' não consistia apenas em nos dar conhecimento e nos preparar para uma profissão: era também uma formação que incentivaria o compromisso contínuo com a justiça social, especialmente com a luta por igualdade racial." E, como lembra Sérgio Haddad, autor de uma biografia de Paulo Freire e que gentilmente escreveu o prefácio à edição brasileira de Ensinando pensamento crítico, bell hooks defende que "a escola não deveria ser um lugar em que os estudantes são doutrinados para apoiar o patriarcado capitalista, supremacista branco e imperialista, mas sim onde aprendam a abrir suas mentes e se engajem em estudos rigorosos para pensar criticamente".
