In a global age, Holocaust commemoration has undergone a process of cosmopolitanization which manifests itself on many levels such as in the emergence of a supranational Holocaust memory and in a transnationally inflected canon of Holocaust art. The objective of the collection is to explore the entangled migrating memories of the Holocaust in North America, Western and Eastern Europe, and Israel by investigating two thematic aspects: First, the specifics of national commemorative cultures and their historical variability and, second, the interplay between national, local and global perspectives in the medial construction of the historical event. Entangled Memories opens up a range of perspectives by re-conceptualizing the practices, conditions, and transformations of Holocaust remembrance within the framework of a dynamic global cultural, intellectual, literary and political history.

Struggles over the meaning of the past are common in postcolonial states. State cultural heritage programs build monuments to reinforce in nation building efforts—often supported by international organizations and tourist dollars. These efforts often ignore the other, often more troubling memories preserved by local communities—markers of colonial oppression, cultural genocide, and ethnic identity. Yet, as the contributors to this volume note, questions of memory, heritage, identity and conservation are interwoven at the local, ethnic, national and global level and cannot be easily disentangled. In a fascinating series of cases from West Africa, anthropologists, archaeologists and art historians show how memory and heritage play out in a variety of postcolonial contexts. Settings range from televised ritual performances in Mali to monument conservation in Djenne and slavery memorials in Ghana.

This volume brings together a diverse group of scholars from North America and Europe to explore the history and memory of Germany’s fateful push for power in the Balkans during the era of the two world wars and the long postwar period. Each chapter focuses on one or more of four interrelated themes: war, empire, (forced) migration, and memory. The first section, “War and Empire in the Balkans,” explores Germany’s quest for empire in Southeast Europe during the first half of the century, a goal that was pursued by economic and military means. The book’s second section, “Aftershocks and Memories of War,” focuses on entangled German-Balkan histories that were shaped by, or a direct legacy of, Germany’s exceptionally destructive push for power in Southeast Europe during World War II. German-Balkan Entangled Histories in the Twentieth Century expands and enriches the neglected topic of Germany’s continued entanglements with the Balkans in the era of the world wars, the Cold War, and today.

This book merges two fascinating developments, one in physics; the other in childhood memories of an earlier life. The thesis here, convincingly developed, is that the scientific discovery of 'entanglement' one aspect of quantum mechanics, may possibly be the answer to the mystery of the childhood memories. Among other fascinating factors explained by the author, relying on proven scientific facts: 1) that the atoms, the basic building blocks of everything and everybody, are not destroyed by death of the person; 2) that relationships developed between atoms in close proximity, such as the billions of them in the portions of the brain involved in memory, continues for the lifetime of the atoms, a change in one coinciding with a change in the others, immediately and no matter the distance ultimately between them, even to the length of the universe; 3) and that the life of most atoms is projected to be many times the projected life of the universe. The text, written by a layman, is in lay language, understandable by any inquisitive laymen.

This open access book provides a concise introduction to a critical development in memory studies. A global memory formation has emerged since the 1990s, in which memories of traumatic histories in different parts of the world, often articulated in the terms established by Holocaust memory, have become entangled, reconciled, contested, conflicted and negotiated across borders. As historical actors and events across time and space become connected in new ways, new grounds for contest and competition arise; claims to the past that appeared de-territorialized in the global memory formation become re-territorialized – deployed in the service of nationalist projects. This poses challenges to scholarship but also to practice: How can we ensure that shared or comparable memories of past injustice continue to be grounds for solidarity between different memory communities? In chapters focusing on Europe, East Asia and Africa, five scholars respond to these challenges from a range of disciplinary perspectives in the humanities.
