This book is about the psycho-political visions and programmes in early-twentieth century Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Amidst the political and social unrest that followed the First World War, psychiatrists attempted to use their clinical insights to understand, diagnose, and treat society at large. The book uses a variety of published and unpublished sources to retrace major debates, protagonists, and networks involved in the redrawing of the boundaries of psychiatry’s sphere of authority. The book is based on three interconnected case studies: the overt pathologisation of the 1918/19 revolution led by right-wing German psychiatrists; the project of medical expansionism under the label of ‘applied psychiatry’ in inter-war Vienna; and the attempt to unite and implement different approaches to psychiatric prophylaxis in the movement for mental hygiene. By exploring these histories, the book also sheds light on the emergence of ideas that still shape the field to the present day and shows the close connection between utopian promises and the worst abuses of psychiatry.

These powerful objects were often used as a synonym for psychiatry and the way psychiatric patients were treated, yet very little is known about the agency of these objects and their appropriation by staff and patients. By focusing on material cultures, this book offers a new perspective on the history of psychiatry: it enables a narrative in which practicing psychiatry is part of a complex entanglement in which power is constantly negotiated. Nicht nur als radikalster Gegenentwurf zur bürgerlichen Kultur, sondern auch als ein Hauptmerkmal expressionistischer Ästhetik an sich kann die Thematisierung von psychischen Extremzuständen und 'Geisteskrankheit' angesehen werden. Nachdem um die Jahrhundertwende die Psychoanalyse Gesellschaft, Individuum und Sexualität unter gänzlich neuen Prämissen dachte, beschäftigte sich der nur wenig später aufkommende Expressionismus in Kunst, Literatur und besonders dem neuen Medium Film mit psychischen Vorgängen, sexueller Motivik, Traum und Rauschzuständen. Aber auch der 'Irre' und seine scheinbar unverstellte und nicht genormte Wahrnehmung von Welt und Subjekt sowie sein Außenseiterstatus sind besonders häufig vorkommende Bilder und Konzepte. Von dem bewusst zugespitzten Stichwort 'Wahnsinn' ausgehend möchte die sechste Ausgabe von Expressionismus nicht nur die Darstellung und Funktion psychischer Krankheiten in der expressionistischen Kunst behandeln, sondern auch die Frage stellen, welche Theorien für die Diskussion leitend sind. Die Beiträge analysieren einerseits die Darstellung und Funktion von Wahnsinn und 'Geisteskrankheit' in Literatur, bildender Kunst und Film. Die Medizingeschichte hat sich in der Vergangenheit geweitet zu einer Kulturgeschichte des Medikalen. Erforscht werden zwar weiterhin aufsehenerregende Krankheiten und Seuchen, die ganze Generationen und Gesellschaften fest im Griff hatten, berühmte Ärzte, Heiler oder auch Patienten und deren Biographien, medizinische Einrichtungen vom Operationssaal bis zum Sanatorium und mehr oder weniger erfolgreiche Therapien. Indes haben sich die Perspektiven auf die Phänomene verändert. So gilt heute das Interesse vor allem den Einstellungen und Praktiken, die mit Gesundheit und Krankheit zu tun hatten, sowie dem Prozess der "Medikalisierung". Für solche prozessbezogenen Aspekte ist ein epochenübergreifender regionalgeschichtlicher Ansatz besonders ergiebig. Umgekehrt weitet eine Kulturgeschichte des Medikalen auch den Horizont für neue regionalhistorische Fragen, etwa danach, wie medikale Regionen und Räume entstanden und entstehen und wie sie sich mit anderen vergleichen lassen. Der Tagungsband widmet sich diesen Fragestellungen in Längsschnitten vom (späten) Mittelalter bis in die Zeitgeschichte.

Berühmte Paare waren und sind beliebte Gegenstände der (wissenschaftlichen) Biographik, der Fiktion oder auch der Boulevardpresse. Häufig ranken sich die Anekdoten und Geschichten um die gleichen Paare: Vor allem Robert und Clara Schumann oder Alma und Gustav Mahler sind als Musikerehepaare des 19. Jahrhunderts bekannt geworden. Christine Fornoff-Petrowski zeigt in ihrer Untersuchung, dass Ehen im Umfeld der bürgerlichen Kunst- und Musikkultur des 19. Jahrhunderts keinesfalls Einzelfälle, sondern Teil einer vielfach gelebten und dabei kontrovers diskutierten Praxis waren. Mit Hilfe der historischen Diskursanalyse zeichnet die Autorin die öffentliche – vor allem in bürgerlichen Medien geführte – Debatte nach und spiegelt diese am Beispiel einzelner, bisher weniger bekannter Musikerehepaare wie Wilhelm Heinrich und Bertha Riehl oder Hermine und Eugen d'Albert. Die aufgedeckten Denkmuster und Narrative beeinflussten nicht nur das Leben und Handeln dieser Paare, sondern haben sich im Erzählen über Künstlerpaare teilweise bis in die Gegenwart gehalten.
