Este livro problematiza a história da formação de professores primários no estado de São Paulo em um momento singular em que as Escolas Normais Livres passam a ser reconhecidas pelo poder público. Foi por meio dessas instituições que o estado ampliou o número de escolas de formação docente a partir da Reforma da Instrução Pública de 1927. Na busca de soluções para ampliar a escola primária e provê-la com professores formados, a Reforma de 1927 equiparou as Escolas Normais Livres às Escolas Normais Oficiais para expandir a formação de professores para os novos núcleos urbanos que se formavam no interior e litoral do estado. Trata-se de um trabalho que questionou os momentos de expansão da formação de professores em São Paulo durante a Primeira República e buscou compreender e analisar o processo de expansão das Escolas Normais Livres na região oeste paulista e o papel dessas instituições. Para a construção dessa narrativa foram levantadas fontes privilegiadas como leis, relatórios, anuários de ensino, mas também documentos encontrados nos arquivos permanentes da Escola Estadual Leônidas do Amara Vieira, em Santa Cruz do Rio Pardo, e do Colégio Nossa Senhora Auxiliadora, em Lins, como livros de matriculas, livros de visitas, atas de exames, entre outros. Este trabalho ressalta a importância dos acervos e arquivos escolares para as investigações sobre a História da Educação no Brasil.

Ao se propor a escrever uma história das escolas isoladas em São Paulo na primeira metade do século XX, Angélica Oriani viu-se diante de desafios empíricos problemáticas historiográficas. No primeiro caso, a localização dos vestígios deixados por essas escolas, por vezes efemeras, supôs a frequên cia não apenas a arquivos e bibliotecas, mas também a delegacias de ensino em uma peregrinação que levou a autora a percorrer cidades do interior do estado, como Assis, Marília e Lins. O expediente foi tanto mais necessário em virtude do recorte da análise, situado entre 1917 e 1945/47, período em que parte da documentação ainda está guardada em arquivos intermediários e, portanto, não processada ou disponibilizada à consulta histórica. No que se refere às proble máticas historiográficas, elas são de duas naturezas Inicialmente. remetem ao próprio conceito de escola isolada. De fato, a nomenclatura só passa existir no momento em que surgem outras modalidades de ensino primário, como as escolas reunidas e os grupos escolares a partir de 1893. Antes disso, em São Paulo, todas as escolas primarias eram isoladas, razão pela qual não se constituiam em uma modalidade especifica de ensino Mas a temática também revela uma singularidade da historiografia educacional brasieira. No Brasil, nunca houve, como existe nos EUA, um campo de pesquisa sobre "escolas urbanas"; ou, como é corrente no México, uma investigação sobre "escolas rurais". Deste modo, os estudos acerca das escolas isoladas, por vezes, se confundiram com aqueles sobre ensino rural, a despeito de muitas dessas unidades de ensino situarem-se em zonas urbanas, criando uma indetermi nação do objeto de pesquisa, urgente de ser superada. A maneira como Angélica lidou com esses impasses nos revela uma investigadora crítica e criativa, ao mesmo tempo dedicada e sagaz, qualidades que somente a leitura deste livro pode desvelar.

Street vending has supplied the inhabitants of Rio de Janeiro with basic goods for several centuries. Once the province of African slaves and free blacks, street commerce became a site of expanded (mostly European) immigrant participation and shifting state regulations during the transition from enslaved to free labor and into the early post-abolition period. Street Occupations investigates how street vendors and state authorities negotiated this transition, during which vendors sought greater freedom to engage in commerce and authorities imposed new regulations in the name of modernity and progress. Examining ganhador (street worker) licenses, newspaper reports, and detention and court records, and considering the emergence of a protective association for vendors, Patricia Acerbi reveals that street sellers were not marginal urban dwellers in Rio but active participants in a debate over citizenship. In their struggles to sell freely throughout the Brazilian capital, vendors asserted their citizenship as urban participants with rights to the city and to the freedom of commerce. In tracing how vendors resisted efforts to police and repress their activities, Acerbi demonstrates the persistence of street commerce and vendors' tireless activity in the city, which the law eventually accommodated through municipal street commerce regulation passed in 1924. A focused history of a crucial era of transition in Brazil, Street Occupations offers important new perspectives on patron-client relations, slavery and abolition, policing, the use of public space, the practice of free labor, the meaning of citizenship, and the formality and informality of work.
