Contemporary Spanish Cinema offers an essential analysis of the main trends and issues in Spanish film since the death of Franco in 1975. While taking account of cinema during the Franco dictatorship, the book focuses principally on developments in the last two decades. Acknowledging the sheer breadth and diversity of Spanish film production since the ending of the regime and the transition to democracy, this study includes chapters on Spanish film’s obsessive concern with the past on popular genre film (including the comedy and the thriller), on representations of gender and sexuality and the work of women film professionals, both behind and in front of the camera, as well as on film produced in Spain’s autonomous communities, particularly in Catalonia and the Basque Country. This book offers a unique and up-to-date focus on a wide range of materials, including work on such established directors as Carlos Saura, Víctor Erice, Pedro Almodóvar, Pilar Miró, Bigas Lina and Josefina Molina as well as exciting new talents such as Julio Medem, Juanma Bajo Ulloa, Alex de la Iglesia, Icíar Bollan, Isabel Coixet and Marta Balletbò-Coll.

Vision Machines written by Paul Julian Smith and has been published by Verso this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996-04-17 with Performing Arts categories.

Over the last decade, visibility and sexuality have become a major theme in Spanish and Cuban cinema, literature and art. Vision Machines explores this development in the light of contemporary history and recent theoretical accounts of sight by writers including Paul Virilio, Gianni Vattimo and Teresa de Lauretis. The very visible women of Almodóvar’s cinema are Paul Julian Smith’s first subject. He shows how, in his early Dark Habits, lesbianizes the look, putting women’s pleasure at the centre of the frame, and then examines Almodóvar’s recent film, Kika, where the conflict between cinema and video is played out in the bodies of women: good, bad and ugly. Moving the focus to Cuba, Smith discussed the reception in Europe and North America of Nestor Almendro’s remarkable documentary on gays in Cuba, Improper Conduct, and traces the trial of visibility to which effeminate men were exposed. He compares Amendor’s work with the autobiography of exile novelist Reinaldo Arenas, which revels in graphic sex, and also looks at the first Cuban film with a gay theme, Gutierrez Alea’s Strawberry and Chocolate. Smith returns to Spain to consider the response of artists and intellectuals to the public invisibility of AIDS in a country with one of the highest rates of HIV transmission in the Eurpean Union. Drawing on Anglo-American debates on the representation of AIDS, he concentrates on the one major intervention by Spanish scholars and artists, Love and Rage, and on the only figure in any medium to address AIDS in his aesthetic practice, the conceptual artist and video-maker Pepe Espaliu. He concludes with a fascinating account of Julio Medem’s pathbreaking film from 1993, The Red Squirrel, which has opened up a new approach to two formerly taboo subjects: Basque nationalism and female sexuality.

A Companion to Pedro Almodóvar “Marvin D’Lugo and Kathleen M. Vernon give us the ideal companion to Pedro Almodóvar’s films. Established and emerging writers offer a rainbow of insights for fans as well as academics.” Jerry W. Carlson, Professor of Film Studies, The City College & Graduate Center CUNY “Rarely has a contemporary film artist been treated to the kind of broad, rich discussion of their work that can be found in A Companion to Pedro Almodóvar.” Richard Peña, Professor of Film Studies, Columbia University Once the enfant terrible of Spain’s youth culture explosion, the Movida, Pedro Almodóvar’s distinctive film style and career longevity have made him one of the most successful and internationally known filmmakers of his generation. Offering a state-of-the-art appraisal of Almodóvar’s cinema, this original collection is a searching analysis of his technique and cultural significance that includes work by leading authorities on Almodóvar as well as talented young scholars. Crucially included here are contributions by film historians from Almodóvar’s native Spain, where he has been undervalued by the academic and critical establishment. With a balance between textual and contextual approaches, the book expands the scope of previous work on the director to explore his fruitful collaborations with fellow professionals in the areas of art design, fashion, and music as well as the growing reach of a global Almodóvar brand beyond Europe and the United States to Latin America and Asia. It also proposes a reevaluation of the political meanings and engagement of his cinema from the perspective of the profound cultural and historical upheavals that have transformed Spain since the 1970s.

Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject Romance Languages - Spanish Studies, grade: 1,3 (A), Kingston University London (Spanish Institute), course: Spanish Cinema, language: English, abstract: Introduction Almodovar's first three films Pepi, Luci, Bom y otras chicas del montón (1980), Laberinto de Pasiones (1982) and Entre Tinieblas (1983) can be seen as a breaking of all the taboos that were forbidden under Franco's regime: there is drug use, "abnormal" sexuality, crude language, adultery, religious blasphemy. The films clearly mirror the new freedoms enjoyed by a generation of film-makers belonging to Spain's "la movida" movement of the late 1970's and early 1980's. Born in 1951, Almodovar mainly grew up in the rural Extremadura, but left for Madrid at the age of sixteen. He originally wanted to attend the national film school, but due to the closure of the school by the Dictator Franco′s repressive government he was unable to go. He instead took a job at a telephone company to make the money to buy himself a Super-8 camera. Almodovar began filming short films in the early 1970s, and quickly became associated with 'la movida'. This essay will be evaluating Almodovar's role as a post-modern director, including a brief demonstration of the development of the post-modern culture after Franco's death. The essay is especially interested in the juxtaposition of homo- and heterosexuality in Almodovar's films and will evaluate the different ways in which Almodovar presents homosexuality. It will also have a close look at the mediums Almodovar uses to make his audience take his absurd film worlds for granted, and accept the happenings and characters as 'normal'.

The questions of gender, nationality, and sexuality are all inextricably intertwined not only in foreign depictions of Spain as a place of blood and passion, of implicitly presocial and unconscious drives, but also in Hispanic accounts of the nation as motherland. In this lecture, Professor Smith focuses on two texts, La casa de Bernarda Alba by Spain's greatest twentieth-century dramatist, García Lorca, and Entre tinieblas by Pedro Almodóvar, its best-known contemporary filmmaker. Three questions are asked of these texts. How do they represent the relations between women on the stage/screen and men outside the diegetic space? How do the all-female communities they depict serve as allegories of the nation at a particular historical moment? Finally, how do the texts represent relations between women?
