Examining the patterns of business development in backward economies, this book demonstrates, the rate and character of business development in Brazil were to a large extent determined by its degree of backwardness, intellectual climate and natural potentialities, and accordingly the course of development of the Brazilian economy differed considerably from processes observed in more advanced countries. In addition, comparison between Minas Gerais, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro shows important differences among the three most important economies in Brazil.

"This volume challenges those who see gender inequalities invariably defining and constraining the lives of women. But it also broadens the conversation about the degree to which business is a gender-blind institution, owned and managed by entrepreneurs whose gender identities shape and reflect economic and cultural change." – Mary A. Yeager, Professor Emerita, University of California, Los Angeles This is the first book to consider nineteenth-century businesswomen from a global perspective, moving beyond European and trans-Atlantic frameworks to include many other corners of the world. The women in these pages, who made money and business decisions for themselves rather than as employees, ran a wide variety of enterprises, from micro-businesses in the ‘grey market’ to large factories with international reach. They included publicans and farmers, midwives and property developers, milliners and plumbers, pirates and shopkeepers. Female Entrepreneurs in the Long Nineteenth Century: A Global Perspective rejects the notion that nineteenth-century women were restricted to the home. Despite a variety of legal and structural restrictions, they found ways to make important but largely unrecognised contributions to economies around the world - many in business. Their impact on the economy and the economy’s impact on them challenge gender historians to think more about business and business historians to think more about gender and create a global history that is inclusive of multiple perspectives. Brazil is a large country in terms of geographic land mass and population size. It’s position in Latin America means that it contributes to much of the economic development within this area. Despite the importance of Brazil in the global economy, not much research has been highlighted about entrepreneurship in the country. This book aims to change this by focusing on Brazil in terms of entrepreneurial endeavours and pursuits. This includes focusing on the rural and urban areas in terms of entrepreneurial practices. Each chapter in the book will focus on a different aspect of entrepreneurship in Brazil including how culture, ethnicity and wealth influence entrepreneurship. Thereby taking a holistic perspective in terms of including both financial and non-financial forms of entrepreneurship. Interesting topics such as sustainable and environmental forms of entrepreneurship will be examined from a Brazilian perspective together with technological forms of entrepreneurship evident in the growth of smart cities within the region. This book will be amongst the first to holistically examine the contemporary hardships and successes of entrepreneurship in Brazil.

The relation of slavery to Brazil's economic and social history has long fascinated researchers. Zephyr Frank focuses on nineteenth-century Rio de Janeiro, where almost half of the city's residents laboured as slaves of diverse owners in a complex urban setting. Slavery persisted in the Brazilian city, in part, because it was entrenched among upwardly mobile entrepreneurs who hired their slaves out for wages, employed them in family businesses, and bought and sold them for profit. Changes in the institution of slavery and the economy of the city gradually limited access to slaves, constricting avenues of social mobility for slaveholders and transforming the lives of the slaves themselves. Frank uses the experiences of one person, Antonio Jose Dutra, as an example of a middling urban slaveholder. Dutra, a former slave himself, owned thirteen slaves whom he employed in his barbering business and musical band. Dutra's story is part of the larger picture Frank paints of those who owned slaves, how they fit into the social and economic development of Brazil, and what slaves and their owners did as slavery rose and then gradually declined in Rio de Janeiro. Frank traces social mobility,
