Excerpt from Entretiens sur l'Architecture Il y a un an et plus, sollicite par des amis et des confreres, je me decidais a ouvrir un atelier et a preparer un cours public d'architecture. La chose ne me paraissait importante que pour ceux qui voudraient bien entrer dans l'atelier ou assister au cours. Je crus donc naivement qu'il suffisait de louer un atelier et de me preparer a faire un cours oral du mieux qu'il me serait possible; mais, dans la republique des arts (republique a la facon de celle de Venise), les affaires ne se traitent pas si facilement. D'abord, de toutes parts, on m'offrit des salles pour faire mon cours, chacun voulait m'envoyer des eleves. Quand je fus pret, les salles ne l'etaient pas; on m'engagea a faire quelques demarches, je recus beaucoup de bonnes paroles, mais rien de decisif. Or, je suis un detestable solliciteur; apres quelques tentatives peu repetees, je l'avoue, je rentrai chez moi et j'attendis tranquillement. J'eus bientot la raison de ce refroidissement graduel. A l'Ecole des beaux-arts, a la Bibliotheque imperiale, des professeurs voulurent bien me faire l'honneur d'attaquer mes tendances par mesure preventive.
