Excerpt from Entstehung und Chemische Struktur der Kohle Wer die letztere F rage in der vorliegenden Form stellt, zeigt, daß er eine veraltete, aber leider heute bei Laien immer noch herrschende Meinung bereits uberwunden hat, namlich, daß die Steinkohle "mehr oder weniger identisch mit freiem Kohlenstoif sei, z. B daß sie vor wiegend aus Kohlenstofi bestehe, zu dem sich ein Bitumen gehalt geselle. In Wirklichkeit liegt die Sache anders; die Kohle besteht scheinbar lediglich aus Verbindungen des Kohlenstoffs mit andern Elementen, die allerdings die Eigenschaft haben, prozentisch sehr reich an Kohlen stoff zu sein. Der Beweis hierfür kann darin gesehen werden, daß es bisher durch keine der zahlreichen Ex traktionsmethoden möglich gewesen ist, einen unlöslichen Ruckstand zu erhalten, der lediglich aus Kohlenstoff bestand. Ja, man könnte sogar fast annehmen, daß Kohlenstoff, der sich bei gewohnlicher Temperatur während der Entstehung der Kohle aus einer Verbindung ausschied, derart reaktionäähig wäre, daß er nicht lange als solcher bestehen bliebe. Daß die chemischen Ver bindungen der Kohle in irgendeiner Beziehung zu den Verbindungen stehen werden, aus denen die Ursprungs substanz der Kohle aufgebaut war, ist einleuchtend, selbst wenn im Laufe der Jahrtausende weitgehende Um wandlungen stattgefunden haben, sofern es nicht allzu gewaltsame, z. This volume, occasioned by the centenary of the Fritz Haber Institute, formerly the Institute for Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry, covers the institute's scientific and institutional history from its founding until the present. The institute was among the earliest established by the Kaiser Wilhelm Society, and its inauguration was one of the first steps in the development of Berlin-Dahlem into a center for scientific research. Its establishment was made possible by an endowment from Leopold Koppel, granted on the condition that Fritz Haber, well-known for his discovery of a method to synthesize ammonia from its elements, be made its director. The history of the institute has largely paralleled that of 20th-century Germany. It undertook controversial weapons research during World War I, followed by a "Golden Era" during the 1920s, in spite of financial hardships. Under the National Socialists it experienced a purge of its scientific staff and a diversion of its research into the service of the new regime, accompanied by a breakdown in its international relations. In the immediate aftermath of World War II it suffered crippling material losses, from which it recovered slowly in the post-war era. In 1953, shortly after taking the name of its founding director, the institute joined the fledgling Max Planck Society. During the 1950s and 60s, the institute supported diverse researches into the structure of matter and electron microscopy in a territorially insular and politically precarious West-Berlin. In subsequent decades, as both Berlin and the Max Planck Society underwent significant changes, the institute reorganized around a board of coequal scientific directors and a renewed focus on the investigation of elementary processes on surfaces and interfaces, topics of research that had been central to the work of Fritz Haber and the first "Golden Era" of the institute.

Frank Handle ̈ 1.1 What to Expect For some time now, I have been toying around with the idea of writing a book about “Ceramic Extrusion”, because to my amazement I have been unable to locate a single existing, comprehensive rundown on the subject – much in contrast to, say, plastic extrusion and despite the fact that there are some outstanding contributions to be found about certain, individual topics, such as those in textbooks by Reed [1], Krause [2], Bender/Handle ̈ [3] et al. By way of analogy to Woody Allen’s wonderfully ironic movie entitled “Eve- thing You Always Wanted to Know about Sex”, I originally intended to call this book “Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Ceramic Extrusion”, but - ter giving it some extra thought, I eventually decided on a somewhat soberer title. Nevertheless, my companion writers and I have done our best – considering our target group and their motives – not to revert to the kind of jargon that people use when they think the less understandable it sounds, the more scienti c it appears. This book addresses all those who are looking for a lot or a little general or selective information about ceramic extrusion and its sundry aspects. We realize that most of our readers will not be perusing this book just for fun or out of intellectual curiosity, but because they hope to get some use out of it for their own endeavours.
