"El libro ... tiene su origen en el seminario denominado Seguridad social y protección integral para adultos mayores: desafíos y estrategias en América Latina y experiencia internacionales, convocado por la CEPAL, la Sociedad Alemana de Cooperación Técnica (GTZ), la Organización Internacional del Trabajo (OIT), el Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID) y la Agencia Sueca de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo (ASDI) a finales de 2009, tras el cual la CEPAL y la GTZ se abocaron a la tarea de reunir los aportes a la discusión, idea que encontró amplia acogida por parte de los expositores.
