The Transportation Land Use, Planning, and Air Quality Conference 2009, held on July 28 and 29 in Centennial, Colorado, provided a forum to examine the challenges of balancing increases in travel demand with growing air-quality concerns by emphasizing the latest research coordinating the advancements and environmental impacts of transportation. The main focus of the conference was the "moving cooler" study, implemented by various federal agencies, state and local governments, and interest groups with the goal of evaluating a broad range of climate change strategies. This proceedings includes selected, peer-reviewed papers that were presented at the conference, covering topics such as: Ø environmental impacts of freight Ø effect of fuel prices Ø integrating land use into transit systems planning Ø climate change, emissions, and air-quality models Ø land-use models Ø advancements in computing technology and modeling The papers in this proceedings will be of great value to engineers working in the fields of climate change, transportation, and land use.

Coordination of land use and transport is one of the most important issues in urban planning from the viewpoint of transport infrastructure supply and amenity in urban space. There has been, therefore, much research conducted in the fields of empirical analysis and theoretical and mathematical modelling of the mechanisms of land use-transport interaction. The members of the Transport and Land Use SIG (Special Interest Group) of the WCTRS (World Conference on Transport Research Society) have conducted extensive research in these fields. Leading on from the activities of ISGLUTI (International Study Group on Land Use-Transport Interaction) chaired by Dr. Vernon Webster, its output was published as a book "Land Use-Transport Interaction / Policies and Models". Concurrently with this ongoing research, energy consumption in the transport sector has been increasing rapidly and become a crucial issue from the viewpoint of global environmental conservation. An emerging research need is to examine and structurally identify the mechanisms of the influence of land use-transport interaction on energy consumption and environmental damage, both locally and globally. The SIG held a seminar in December 1993 in Blackheath, Australia which was the first meeting where world class land use-transport experts gathered to discuss the above topic, covering fact finding, scenario analysis and modelling. This book contains selected papers from the seminar. The Australian Government, CSIRO (Australia) and the Asahi Glass Foundation (Japan) supported the seminar. The book was edited with an enormous and patient help by Dr. Omar Osman at Nagoya University.

Transportation, Land Use, and Environmental Planning examines the practices and policies linking transportation, land use and environmental planning needed to achieve a healthy environment, thriving economy, and more equitable and inclusive society. It assesses best practices for improving the performance of city and regional transportation systems, looking at such issues as public transit and non-motorized travel investments, mixed use and higher density urban development, radically transformed vehicles, and transportation systems. The book lays out the growing need for greater integration of transportation, land use, and environmental planning, looking closely at changing demographic needs, public health concerns, housing affordability, equity, and livability. In addition, strategies for achieving these desired outcomes are presented, including urban design and land use planning, regional and corridor-level transit plans, bike and pedestrian improvements, demand management strategies, and emerging technologies and services. The final part of the book examines implementation challenges, considering lessons from the US and around the globe at both local and regional levels. Introduces never-before-published research Offers best practices for transit, cycling, urban design and housing provision Assesses emerging developments, such as smart cities, new vehicle technologies, automated highways and transportation sharing Examines the institutional and political dimensions of sustainability planning at the urban and regional levels Utilizes case studies from around the world that show alternative ways forward

For many years the integration of the location of land use and activities in spatial systems, as well as the provision of transport in movement of goods, services and people, has been recognized as a challenge amongst various specialists, including: engineers, transportation planners, economists, environmentalists, urban and regional planners and developers. The purpose of this book is to address transportation modelling in terms of technology, techniques and methodology application in context to the interface between transportation systems, land use planning, and environmental challenges and application. The methodology of transportation modelling is applied to international practices and application based on specific case studies, inclusive of public transportation projects; transportation modelling techniques in practice; international research agenda; network design and channel strategies; strategic planning; application of technology in traffic surveys and interpretation; emissions from transportation systems; application of mathematical models and the interface between environment, land use and development in terms of location in space and the resulting activities.Of value to both theorists and practitioners, this book references the integration of transportation modelling techniques within an interdisciplinary environment inside all spatial systems.

This report describes the transportation planning process and discusses where and how environmental factors can be addressed effectively at the state and metropolitan levels. This report should be especially useful to federal, state department of transportation (DOT), metropolitan planning organization (MPO), and local transportation planners, as well as other practitioners concerned with addressing environmental factors within transportation systems planning, priority programming, and project development planning leading to implementation. The research focused on environmental issues within the long-range transportation planning processes of state DOTs and MPOs and included the following: (1) a comprehensive review of recent literature; (2) a survey of approaches employed by state DOTs, MPOs, and environmental regulatory agencies; (3) a review of federal regulations and guidance on environmental factors; and (4) case studies to synthesize current practice in environmental planning.
