Most governments have established procedures to appraise the environmental impacts of proposed activities. The focus of these environmental assessment procedures has long been on local environmental issues, such as air, water, and land pollution, which have a direct and concrete effect on communities. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) estimates that 815 million people in the world today are chronically hungry. After declining for over a decade, in 2017 global hunger is on the rise again.
