This book contains most of the papers presented at the 7th International Conference on Environmental Problems in Coastal Regions . The conference provides a forum for the discussion of problems that are related to coastal regions, which are increasingly being affected by population growth and industrial and tourism activities. The pressure of these developments generates social, ecological and economic problems, the solution of which requires an interdisciplinary approach. Effective strategies for the management of coastal areas should therefore consist of dynamic and integrated solutions in order to control their environmental quality. The contributions included in this book are listed in the following sections: Ecology and the Coastal Environment; Coastal Deterioration; Management of Risk; Water Quality Issues; Sediment Transport; Coastal Dunes

"In recent years, it has become increasingly important to study the behaviour of coastal areas, and to be able to model such regions under normal and extreme conditions. The poor environmental quality in these regions, due to pollution and other problems, has been the cause of serious international concern, with many of the worst affected areas being densely populated or the sites of major industrial development. Computer models, in combination with sensing equipment and experimental sampling techniques, have helped in the prevention of natural and man-made disasters, by providing adequate means for the study of the behaviour of water, ground and air systems. Computer models are also used for the determination and assessment of a situation once a disaster has occurred, thus aiding the optimization of the resources available from remedial action. However, it is clear that further study into environmental problems, using efficient and reliable modelling and analysis tools, is essential in order to maintain and improve on existing methods." "This book will be of particular interest to people involved in environmental studies and environmental modelling."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Advancing The Science Of Climate Change written by National Research Council and has been published by National Academies Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-01-10 with Science categories.

Climate change is occurring, is caused largely by human activities, and poses significant risks for-and in many cases is already affecting-a broad range of human and natural systems. The compelling case for these conclusions is provided in Advancing the Science of Climate Change, part of a congressionally requested suite of studies known as America's Climate Choices. While noting that there is always more to learn and that the scientific process is never closed, the book shows that hypotheses about climate change are supported by multiple lines of evidence and have stood firm in the face of serious debate and careful evaluation of alternative explanations. As decision makers respond to these risks, the nation's scientific enterprise can contribute through research that improves understanding of the causes and consequences of climate change and also is useful to decision makers at the local, regional, national, and international levels. The book identifies decisions being made in 12 sectors, ranging from agriculture to transportation, to identify decisions being made in response to climate change. Advancing the Science of Climate Change calls for a single federal entity or program to coordinate a national, multidisciplinary research effort aimed at improving both understanding and responses to climate change. Seven cross-cutting research themes are identified to support this scientific enterprise. In addition, leaders of federal climate research should redouble efforts to deploy a comprehensive climate observing system, improve climate models and other analytical tools, invest in human capital, and improve linkages between research and decisions by forming partnerships with action-oriented programs.

Coastal Zone '91 is the seventh in a series of biennial multidisciplinary symposia on comprehensive coastal and ocean management. The papers included in this proceedings review technical knowledge and current practice for the improvement of planning, environmental considerations, design, development, and conservation actions related to coasts, wetlands, and oceans. These topics are addressed from different points of view: engineering and science; data gathering and monitoring; legal, regulatory and political aspects of coastal management; planning, conservation and development; and public information and citizen participation. This proceedings will help to diffuse technical knowledge and current practice for the improvement of planning, design, development and conservation actions relating to our coasts and oceans.

This book contains the proceedings of the seventh in a series of biennial conferences on the topic of sustainable regional development that began in 2003. Organised by the Wessex Institute, the conference series provides a common forum for all scientists specialising in the range of subjects included within sustainable development and planning. In order to ensure that planning and development can meet our present needs without compromising future generations, planners, environmentalists, architects, engineers, policy makers, and economists must work together The use of modern technologies in planning gives us new potential to monitor and prevent environmental degradation. In recent years, in many countries an increase in spatial problems has led to planning crises. Planning problems are often associated with uneven development, deterioration of the quality of urban life, and destruction of the environment. The increasing urbanisation of the world, coupled with the global issues of environmental pollution, resource shortage, and economic restructuring, demand that we ensure a decent quality of life for our cities. Other environments, such as rural areas, forests, coastal regions, and mountains, face their own problems that urgently require solutions in order to avoid irreversible damage. Effective strategies for management should consider planning and regional development, two closely related disciplines, and emphasise the demand to handle these matters in an integrated way. The papers in the book cover such topics as: Regional Planning; City Planning; Sustainability and the Built Environment; Cultural Heritage; Environmental Management; Environmental Policies and Planning; Sustainable Tourism; Resources Management; Social and Political Issues; Rural Developments; Sustainable Solutions in Emerging Countries; Transportation; Energy Resources; Environmental Economics; Sustainable Assessment; Sustainable Development Indicators; Sustainability Modelling; Governance; Resilience; Community Planning; Planning for Equality; Quality of Life.
