To leave our planet liveable in the next millennium mankind is forced to find environmentally friendly ways in solving the problems of everyday life. Among others, technologies of producing chemicals, absolutely necessary for maintaining a comfortable life, have to be modified, in some instances fundamentally changed now, or in the very near future. Developing new technologies requires strong and innovative fundamental research. In order to provide opportunity for crossfertilization the Federation of European Zeolite Associations (FEZA) decided to organise a conference, where researchers from academia as well as industry can meet, exchange ideas, show and discuss research efforts and results concerning the development of environmentally friendly processes and technologies. The conference, and thus the proceedings are divided into two main parts. The first part contains works concerning the synthesis, modification and characterisation of zeolitic materials as catalyst candidates in environmentally friendly technologies. Works in the second part describe various applications starting from developing highly selective reactions for the fine chemical industry, through waste-water treatment to applying zeolite for formulating bacteria for pest control.

Zeolites and related molecular sieves have quickly become important pathways to new opportunities in the fields of oil processing and petrochemical synthesis. The signs of intense activity in both industry and academia are evident: burgeoning papers and patent applications; increasing numbers of industrial zeolite-based processes and their rapid expansion into organic chemicals manufacturing; recent progress in zeolite accessibility range, matrix behaviour, lattice components and satellite structures; and the recognition that zeolites, which are stable and can be regenerated, may be incorporated into new, environmentally friendly processes. This volume offers a thorough, up-to-date introduction to zeolites and such related materials as crystalline aluminium phosphates and clays. Its 16 chapters, each written by specialists, provide detailed treatments of zeolite theory (including a review of major developments), zeolite laboratory and research practice, and zeolite industry applications. Students and individuals entering the field will find Introduction to Zeolite Science and Practice a thorough guidebook. Experienced researchers will appreciate its in-depth coverage of the zeolite spectrum, including the latest views on zeolite structure, characterization and applications.

Zeolites, a Hewin International Report, focuses on current and future markets for natural zeolites and synthetic zeolites. This original work based on extensive first-hand interviews and primary and secondary research is intended to guide executives, R&D managers, and investors to ground floor partnering, technology transfer, and investment opportunities. The Report explores developing applications for naturally occurring zeolites in categories such as pet litters, fertilizer aids, soil amendments, animal feed supplements, water treatments, and the removal of radioactive species and heavy metals from waste streams. Synthetic zeolites role as detergent builders, as petroleum refiners, and as petrochemical processing catalysts are also examined. Of course, the growing public sensitivity to environmental issues and the resulting ban on the use of phosphate builders has benefited the eco-friendly zeolites.

This new century will be an age in which humanity will strive for the recovery and preservation of a more natural environment and also for the establishment of clean and safe energy supply technologies. Up until now, environmental pollution and destruction on a global scale as well as the lack of sufficient clean energy have drawn great attention and concern to the vital need for totally new environmentally friendly, ecologically clean chemical technology, materials and processes -- the most important challenge facing chemical scientists for future generations. In this respect, zeolites offer very unique and interesting physicochemical properties such as a pore structure of a molecular scale, ion-exchange capabilities, a strong surface acidity and a unique internal surface topology. It would, therefore, be of great significance to develop well-defined molecular scale catalysts within zeolite cavities and frameworks which would lead to the design of more active and selective photofunctional and photocatalytic systems, particularly systems able to utilise the very abundant solar energy and convert them into safe and useful chemical energy. The central topics of this book is how to utilise photofunctional zeolites for applications in the recovery and preservation of our environment while, at the same time, trying to develop clean and safe energy supply technologies. A vital new era is emerging in the utilisation of the most limitless, clean and efficient energy source -- the sun by applying photofunctional materials. Research on photofunctional zeolites is only the beginning in the harvesting of this vast and powerful energy source not only to develop clean and safe photochemical processes and systems for industry but also to develop systems that can eliminate and cleanse the many devastating toxic agents that are polluting our environment.
