"As one of the outcomes of the Ephemeral City Research Project conceived in the Harvard Graduate School of Design with the aim of bringing to light the idea that nonpermanent configurations of the urban landscape are legitimate within the discourse on cities this book describes temporary settlements from all over the world that challenge the illusion of the permanence of the urban landscape. Ephemeral Urbanism invites us to ponder over aspects of material impermanence such as dematerialization and disassembly as an integral part of the designand construction processes of cities. Ranging from the scale of the small temporary infill within the urban, to the scale of the ephemeral mega cities, this book gives an overview of hundreds of cases, analyzing settlements or configurations that are constructed for a limited period of time. Through diagrams, photographs and aerial images, this preliminary survey presents an exploration of ome interesting prototypes of flexible urban planning and design. Texts by Richard Sennett and Ricky Burdett give the appropriate framework to understand the relevance of this book."--Provider.

Lives Of The Later Caesars written by Anthony Birley and has been published by Penguin UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-02-24 with History categories.

One of the most controversial of all works to survive from ancient Rome, the Augustan History is our main source of information about the Roman emperors from 117 to 284 AD. Written in the late fourth century by an anonymous author, it is an enigmatic combination of truth, invention and humour. This volume contains the first half of the History, and includes biographies of every emperor from Hadrian to Heliogabalus - among them the godlike Marcus Antonius and his grotesquely corrupt son Commodus. The History contains many fictitious (but highly entertaining) anecdotes about the depravity of the emperors, as the author blends historical fact and faked documents to present our most complete - albeit unreliable - account of the later Roman Caesars.

The artist's major monograph exploring every aspect of his career. Massimo Scolari, who has been Professor of Architecture, Design and Modelling in Venice since 1973, is also an internationally famous painter and designer. A versatile artist, Scolari was visiting professor in numerous European and North American universities between 1975 and 1993. He was and is editor of several architecture journals and a member of the Paris "Bureau de la Recherche Architecturale" international scientific committee. This publication presents a significant number of works - all analysed extensively - produced between 1965 and 2011 which trace the entire trajectory of Scolari's artistic production: oil paintings and watercolours, installations, ink and pencil drawings, elevations, sections, architectural models, and theatre sets and costumes. One of the main objectives of this edition is to clarify the central role played by representation in Scolari's work. In order to do this, the significant texts included in the book address Scolari's focus on the visualization of the architectural idea, a feature of his approach that allows him to detach the discipline from some of its more conventional procedures of embodiment, construction, and realization. This is important at a moment when a prevailing emphasis on digital technology and constructive technique has tended to obscure the role played by the imagination, and its indispensable corollary, the hand of the architect, in the design and production of architecture.

To conclude their survey, the authors look at how elements of Art Nouveau were absorbed into Art Deco after World War I and how Art Nouveau styles of tile-making have been revived in the 1980s and 1990s. A final chapter gives useful advice to the collector of Art Nouveau tiles, suggesting ways of organizing, restoring and preserving them."--BOOK JACKET.
