Science and society have been confronted with epidemics and pandemics for centuries – the diseases often are perilous, sometimes mysterious. The reactions, individual or collective, thus vary between aggressive and fatalistic behavior, escape and evacuation. The historical experience can help encountering present threats, e.g. the estimation of the swine flu virus in 2007/09 was based on the record of the Spanish influenza of 1918/19. The results of the international conference, given by the Institute for the History of Medicine in Düsseldorf, focus on new perspectives in the history of pandemics and epidemics: (1) the global and the local, (2) the cultural impact and (3) the history of science beyond the traditional motive of men vs. microbes. There is a broad spectrum of subjects, chronologically and geographically, ranging from the study of mediaeval sources concerning a mysterious disease in the city of Nurnberg, over the archaeological research of Puerto Rican quarantine measures, to a social history of the pneumonic plague in early 20th century North East Asia. Rather unconventional is an approach to a “social epidemic” of road traffic accidents, or the presentation of a medical historical teaching experiment, combining facts with fiction. The essays deliver an insight into the latest international research on the history of epidemics and pandemics, bringing together the perspectives of historians, medical scientists, sociologists, archaeologists and others.

Feeling Dis Ease In Modern History written by Rob Boddice and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-05-05 with History categories.

This book explores experiences of illness, broadly construed. It encompasses the emotional and sensory disruptions that attend disease, injury, mental illness or trauma, and gives an account of how medical practitioners, experts, lay authorities and the public have felt about such disruptions. Considering all sides of the medical encounter and highlighting the intersection of intellectual history and medical knowledge, of institutional atmospheres, built environments and technological practicalities, and of emotional and sensory experience, Feeling Dis-ease in Modern History presents a wide-ranging affective account of feeling well and of feeling ill. Especially occupied with the ways in which dynamics of power and authority have either validated or discounted dis-eased feelings, the book's contributors probe at the intersectional politics of medical expertise and patient experience to better understand situated expressions of illness, their reception, and their social, cultural and moral valuation. Drawing on methodologies from the histories of emotions, senses, science and the medical humanities, this book gives an account of the complexity of undergoing illness: of feeling dis-ease.

Vulnerabilities written by Stefania Achella and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-10-26 with Philosophy categories.

Drawing from a wide array of disciplinary perspectives and geographical contexts, this volume offers new insights for critically engaging with the problem of vulnerability. The essays here contained take the move from the COVID-19 pandemic, in order to explore the inherent vulnerability of individuals, but also of social, economic and political systems, and probe the descriptive and prescriptive import of the concept. Each chapter provides a self-contained perspective on vulnerability, as well as a specific methodological framework for questioning its meaning. Taken together, the chapters combine into a multi-disciplinary toolkit for approaching the various forms and structures of vulnerability, with a special attention to the intersectional factors shaping the individual experience of it: from gender to age, from disability to mental illness, from hospitalisation to incarceration. The book explores the theoretical richness and complexity of the concept and proposes new analytical approaches to it, before illustrating its multifariousness through empirically grounded case studies. The closing section engages with “the future of vulnerability”, as a hermeneutic, epistemological, and critical-normative perspective to be deployed beyond the domain of global crises and emergencies. The volume is primarily intended as a reference for scholars in the human, social and health sciences. The accessible structure and plain language of the chapters make it also a valuable didactic resource for graduate courses in philosophy, the social sciences and public health.

The use of literary texts in language classrooms is firmly established, but new questions arise with the transfer to remote teaching and learning. How do we teach literature online? How do learners react to being taught literature online? Will new genres emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic? Is the literary canon changing? This volume celebrates the vitality of literary and pedagogic responses to the pandemic and presents research into the phenomena observed in this evolving field. One strand of the book discusses literary outputs stimulated by the pandemic as well as past pandemics. Another strand looks at the pedagogy of engaging learners with literature online, examining learners of different ages and of different proficiency levels and different educational backgrounds, including teacher education. Finally, a third strand looks at the affordances of various technologies for teaching online and the way they interact with literature and with language learning. The contributions in this volume take literature teaching online away from static lecturing strategies, present numerous options for online teaching, and provide research-based grounding for the implementation of these pedagogies.

[Public Health] Public concern for the health of the population has once again shown its relevance and its problems during the Covid-19 pandemic. Problems of the health systems and international health justice, the political and economic embedding of health care and welfare, but also interpretative schemes of diseases and physical practices became visible. As a subject of ethics, public health requires a systematic treatment in which problems of medical ethics are to be considered in connection with questions of social ethics, political ethics and the ethics of lifestyle. The volume combines social and medical-ethical, legal, historical, body-theoretical and work-sociological analyses with theological perspectives.

This book offers a diachronical and inter-/transmedia approach to the relationship of media and fear in a variety of geographical and cultural settings. This allows for an in-depth understanding of the media’s role in pandemics, wars and other crises, as well as in political intimidation. The book assembles chapters from a variety of authors, focusing on the relation between media and fear in the West, the Middle East, the Arab World and China. Besides its geographical and cultural diversity, the volume also takes a long-term perspective, bringing together cases from transforming media environments which span over a century. The book establishes a strong and historically persistent nexus between media and fear, which finds ever-new forms with new media but always follows similar logics.
