The “fascinating” story of the CDC’s intrepid investigators, who travel the world to protect us from deadly pathogens (Chicago Tribune). Since its founding in 1951, the Epidemic Intelligence Service has waged war on every imaginable ailment. When an epidemic hits, the EIS will be there to crack the case, however mysterious or deadly, saving countless lives in the process. Over the years they have successfully battled polio, cholera, and smallpox, to name a few, and in recent years have turned to the epidemics killing us now—smoking, obesity, and gun violence among them. The successful EIS model has spread internationally: former EIS officers on the staff of the Centers for Disease Control have helped to establish nearly thirty similar programs around the world. EIS veterans have gone on to become leaders in the world of public health in organizations such as the World Health Organization. Inside the Outbreaks takes readers on a riveting journey through the history of this remarkable organization, following Epidemic Intelligence Service officers on their globetrotting quest to eliminate the most lethal and widespread threats to the world’s health.

A NEW AND ESSENTIAL RESOURCE FOR THE PRACTICE OF EPIDEMIOLOGY AND PUBLIC HEALTH The CDC Field Epidemiology Manual is a definitive guide to investigating acute public health events on the ground and in real time. Assembled and written by experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as other leading public health agencies, it offers current and field-tested guidance for every stage of an outbreak investigation -- from identification to intervention and other core considerations along the way. Modeled after Michael Gregg's seminal book Field Epidemiology, this CDC manual ushers investigators through the core elements of field work, including many of the challenges inherent to outbreaks: working with multiple state and federal agencies or multinational organizations; legal considerations; and effective utilization of an incident-management approach. Additional coverage includes: · Updated guidance for new tools in field investigations, including the latest technologies for data collection and incorporating data from geographic information systems (GIS) · Tips for investigations in unique settings, including healthcare and community-congregate sites · Advice for responding to different types of outbreaks, including acute enteric disease; suspected biologic or toxic agents; and outbreaks of violence, suicide, and other forms of injury For the ever-changing public health landscape, The CDC Field Epidemiology Manual offers a new, authoritative resource for effective outbreak response to acute and emerging threats. *** Oxford University Press will donate a portion of the proceeds from this book to the CDC Foundation, an independent nonprofit and the sole entity created by Congress to mobilize philanthropic and private-sector resources to support the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's critical health protection work. Intelligent Modeling, Prediction, and Diagnosis from Epidemiological Data: COVID-19 and Beyond is a handy treatise to elicit and elaborate possible intelligent mechanisms for modeling, prediction, diagnosis, and early detection of diseases arising from outbreaks of different epidemics with special reference to COVID-19. Starting with a formal introduction of the human immune systems, this book focuses on the epidemiological aspects with due cognizance to modeling, prevention, and diagnosis of epidemics. In addition, it also deals with evolving decisions on post-pandemic socio-economic structure. The book offers a comprehensive coverage of the most essential topics, including: A general overview of pandemics and their outbreak behavior A detailed overview of CI techniques Intelligent modeling, prediction, and diagnostic measures for pandemics Prognostic models Post-pandemic socio-economic structure The accompanying case studies are based on available real-world data sets. While other books may deal with this COVID-19 pandemic, none features topics covering the human immune system as well as influences on the environmental disorder due to the ongoing pandemic. The book is primarily intended to benefit medical professionals and healthcare workers as well as the virologists who are essentially the frontline fighters of this pandemic. In addition, it also serves as a vital resource for relevant researchers in this interdisciplinary field as well as for tutors and postgraduate and undergraduate students of information sciences.

Robust evidence from high-quality research is vital for pandemic and epidemic intelligence, forming the basis for effective collaborative surveillance and informed public health decisions. The COVID-19 pandemic has spurred innovation in data and laboratory science and improved our ability to detect, assess and respond to health threats. However, research on surveillance methods and tools requires greater coherence and more efficient ways to translate research for evidence-based policy-making. The WHO Pandemic Hub has coordinated a process to set research priorities that should be particularly relevant for routine public health surveillance practices in collaboration with the Global Research Collaboration for Infectious Disease Preparedness (GloPID-R), Charité University Hospital Berlin and the WHO Science Division and with a financial contribution and observer role of Wellcome Trust. The goal was to identify the key research areas that would generate high-quality evidence and methods to better inform decision-making in global health emergencies. This technical brief outlines the priorities for research in pandemic and epidemic intelligence identified through the prioritization process.
