In the l~nited States and in Europe~ there has been an increasing interest in the relationship between individual behavior and disease. The American National Academy of Sciences (Hamberg, Elliott, and Parron, 1982)' through its Institutes of Medicine, has estimated that as many as 50 percent of chronic disease cases can be traced to individual behaviors such as smoking, diet, exercise, etc. Similar conclusions have been reached by a variety of European investigators and institutes. The World Health Organization has also expressed considerable interest in individual behavior in relation to the development of chronic disease. Thus, throughout the NATO countries there has been increased awareness of the relationship between behavior and disease. However, communication among investigators in different countries has been rather limited. Further, many different scientific disciplines including psychology, sociology, medicine, microbiology, statistics, and epidemiology have all developed new and different literatures in this field. One purpose of this book is to bring together contributions from scientists in each of these fields. Much of the variance in individual health behavior occurs across countries rather than within countries. Thus, we can learn much from comparing behavior-disease relationships across countries. To date, there have been few studies which have had an adequate international basis for these comparisons. Interest in behavioral epidemiology is a relatively recent phenomena. Thus, many scientists are entering the field without uniform background, experience, or training. This book discusses approaches common in a variety of NATO countries.

Beginners Guide to Epidemiology Epidemiology is the scientific study of patterns, causes, and effects of health and disease conditions in defined populations. It involves analyzing and interpreting data to understand the distribution and determinants of health-related events. Epidemiologists aim to identify risk factors, prevent diseases, and improve public health through evidence-based interventions. Epidemiology relies on a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate health issues at both individual and population levels. Epidemiology forms the foundation of public health by providing vital information for disease prevention, health promotion, policy-making, and healthcare planning. It helps in identifying factors that contribute to health disparities, thus guiding interventions to address these disparities. By understanding the distribution of diseases and their causes, epidemiology plays a critical role in improving the overall health and well-being of communities. understanding epidemiology is vital for comprehending health and disease in populations. It provides the tools to identify patterns, assess risk factors, and formulate strategies for disease prevention and health improvement. With its historical roots and continuous evolution, epidemiology remains a cornerstone of public health efforts worldwide. TO CONTINUE READING, GRAB YOUR COPY NOW!!!

Hygiene, together with epidemiology, represent the integral, biomedical fundaments of public health. The threat of epidemics depopulating both rural population and expanding urban centres, compelled medicine to develop these two new disciplines in the 19th century. Hygiene is the science of health preservation. Originally, it dealt with all factors affecting the physical and mental health and well-being of the population; it was rooted in the medical knowledge of disease incidence and disease prevention. The firm link between hygienic theories and practice with that of health status promote the prevention and control over infectious diseases. Initially, epidemiological focus was on communicable diseases, later it expanded to non-communicable ones. This text will support the preparation for a state exam at a pre-graduate level, providing thus a starting point for acquiring the desirable knowledge. Second revised edition
